The Chicago and North Western Transportation Company (CNW) was a railroad operating in the midwestern United States. It operated from 1865 until it's take over by the Union Pacific in April 1995.

The EMD GP7 was the first in the line of "General Purpose" diesel-electric locomotives built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division. They were built between 1949 and 1954. In 1950, CNW aquired the first 3 EMD GP7 demonstrator units. Later CNW assembled a large inventory of GP7's, some by new purchases, some purchased from other railroads, and some through mergers. During their life span, the CNW GP7's went through several variations of the green and yellow paint scheme.
