Indeed, the change of Planet Class is too extreme. You have a HOT class (Lava), which can only switch to DEAD or WET before reach the COLD class (Desert).

You can also change it to a WET class instead then move to COLD.

So if i have a lava planet, first i need tonchange it into a barren, and then from barren into a desert?

I like this guide because it helped me to understand what the two terraforming techs do. However, don't be intimidated. If you have both techs, you can change any biome into what you want it to be, and it's easy to do within the game.
