Horizon Zero Dawn developer Guerrilla Games is looking into why the PC version of the game is crashing. The PC version launched on August 7, but it has some technical issues that have frustrated many players.

Players have started to post their own workarounds on how to avoid crashes, but nothing is guaranteed to prevent them until Guerrilla Games implements a patch. On top of the reports of crashing, GameSpot's Michael Higham encountered significant frame rate drops, stuttering, and numerous bugs like character models showing the wrong texture.

Crashes on Startup are generally caused by an external source such as non updated drivers or low specifications. Check if your hardware meet the minimum recommendations. Next, check out if your GPU drivers are updated and finish the updates if needed. Then, make sure that you’re running the correct C++ distributables version. Download the correct one and reinstall it if you see the issue persisting.

Disable Steam Overlay
Players on Steam have reported that disabling Steam Overlay during their gameplay is fixing the issue as well.

• Open the Steam client and navigate to the Steam > Settings/Preferences > In-game tab. ...

Verify integrity of game files.
It should only repair and replace files in the game itself. Any mods that change those files should load normally the next time you launch the game. I've done this with Skyrim and Fallout 4 many times and it has fixed many issues without ever causing issues.

If those are not making this better, then check your GPU drivers for any updates.

If Horizon Zero Dawn doesn’t open up when you launch it then the first thing you want to do is run it with Administrator rights. If this doesn’t solve the issue, whitelist the game on your anti-virus or firewall program and try again. Last but not least, check if you meet the minimum requirements and whether or not you have the correct version of DirectX and C++ Visual Studio distributables.

There are several issues connected to Anisotropic Filtering right now and those have no clear fix. Guerilla has released a list of known issues and this is one of them. The studio promises to address the matter as soon as possible. Until then, you can choose the default setting and you should have no issues.

If your download is stuck at a certain point, then you should start with the basics. Restart your router and check your connection speed. If this isn’t the issue then stop and start the download again or delete the game and start it once more if the issue continues.

One thing I'd like to ask is if you could add a few things, if you're still maintaining this guide.

1. There is a commonly-reported audio configuration issue that can affect gameplay. The cure is to set the sound device used by the game to 24 bit 48 kHz or less :answers.microsoft[answers.microsoft.com]

2. People have found that third party sound control software (most commonly, Nahimic) tends to interfere with smooth operation of the game.

3. People have found that in some cases, overly aggressive boost clocks - particularly on nVidia - can cause game stability issues :steamcommunity

4. Game mods are version-dependent and can in some cases prevent successful game launch.

5. Corrupted game saves can cause similar launch issues. A workaround is to move the save files to another location and launch "clean", and then reinstate the files one by one until you hit the bad one :steamcommunity

6. Steam cloud sync does not work well with this game and people have reported disappearing save games as a result. The workaround is to disable cloud sync for the game :youtube
