STAR WARS Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II Remastered Mod [updated 10.12.2023]
Av Arc
This guide shows the simplest possible way to get the Remastered/HD version of game (hardware acceleration, compatibility fixes, high resolution support, new textures, nicer models, FOV configurability etc.) on Win 7/8/10/11 machines. I created this this guide because just like many other people I've had issues with game eg. black screen after adding mods or inability to play modded game directly from Steam. So I created this simple guide I would love to have before my "adventure" with modding SWJKDF2. This guide was created in 2020 and it is updated when creator of the mod GeneralTantor updates it (current version is 3.2).

This guide:
  1. provides link to one mod installer package (yeah, only one with OpenJKDF2, the Jedi Knight Neural Upscale Texture Pack, the Enhancement Mod for JkGfxMod (JK Edition) 1.0),
  2. explains how to install it (which certainly is not a rocket science) and configure game in mod settings (which is simple when you know what to do),
  3. explains in what way launch modded game for a first time and how to configure it in game settings ,
  4. explains how to integrate modded game with Steam (launching it directly from Steam and working Steam Overlay).

Download and Install Mod Installer Package
UPDATE!

Author of mod package GeneralTantor updated it to version 3.2 on 30th of July 2023. So the guide is updated too,

Check Jedi Knight Remastered project site on Mod DB: https://www.moddb.com/mods/jedi-knight-remastered if that is what you want. Author of the package provides us with short information about it as a whole and about its components (with links to each of them if you would like to install them separately).

Screenshot with info about mods:

If you like it, download Jedi_Knight_Remastered_3.2.zip from https://www.moddb.com/mods/jedi-knight-remastered/downloads/jedi-knight-remastered-30.

Windows Defender may flag this .zip file as malware due to the inject.exe inner working - that at least was in previous versions as people report that it was fixed in 3.1.1. It's your call obviously but I do use this mod (v. 1, v. 2, v. 3.0, v. 3.1.1 and now v. 3.2) since 2020 without any issues.

Here you have installation video guide from creator GeneralTantor. Process for Steam installation starts at 20 min 18 sec:

In short:

Unpack Jedi_Knight_Remastered_3.2.zip, run the JediKnightRemasteredv3.2.exe from unpacked folder and install the mod package into your Jedi Knight Dark Forces 2 game directory. For Steam default directory is:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Star Wars Jedi Knight

You should install Mod Package on fresh Steam installation. If you played game before, You should uninstall it and remove any files from or just delete Star Wars Jedi Knight folder in Steam directory and install fresh game.

After installation you will get 3 new shortcuts on desktop:
  • JRK Configuration Guide
  • Jedi Knight Remastered 3.2
  • Uninstall Jedi Knight Remastered 3.2
Configure Game Settings
Run game from Jedi Knight Remastered 3.2 shortcut (not from Steam), create new Player, go to the Display and check:
  • x Enable Fullscreen
  • x Enable HiDPI
  • x Enable Texture Filtering
  • x Enable Bloom
  • x Enable SSAO
Other settings, like FOV, FPS Limit or Controls, Sound etc. set to your liking. Read Jedi Knight Remastered Configuration Guide for more info about available settings.

If you want Steam integration (launching directly from Steam, Steam time count, Steam Overlay, Steam screenshots) check Integration with Steam part of this guide.

Integration with Steam [timecount/screenshots]
Go to your Star Wars Jedi Knight folder and:
  1. rename JediKnight.exe to backup-JediKnight.exe,
  2. rename openjkdf2-64.exe to JediKnight.exe,
  3. launch game from Steam and wait until it launches (it may take few seconds at first launch),
  4. you may go to Settings and check if all settings are correct.

Done. You may now play game directly from Steam with screenshot ability and Steam counting your time in the game.
Extra: play Star Wars Jedi Knight Mysteries of the Sith Remastered from STAR WARS Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II Remastered
You may play Star Wars Jedi Knight Mysteries of the Sith Remastered or other mods directly from STAR WARS Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II Remastered. Click Expansions & Mods as shown below:

Yeah, Windows Explorer by default doesn't show type of file, so probably there were 2 .exe - one visible and one hidden so that was the issue for Steam.

Adding .exe to it is what was causing the problem, just renaming it to JediKnight without the .exe worked

Are you sure that you renamed it properly including type of file =.exe in filename? It's just basic switch of files names but many people have problem with that. I use Total Commander for operation of files so it shows me always the type of file. I will check it later in the weekend if that's not the case.

The Steam integration instructions don't work, i renamed both files as you described but Steam keeps saying error missing exe when i try to launch the game

You're so awesome!! Love the guide, thank you!

I never played these games when they came out, closest I got was a disk copy of Jedi Academy when I was like 6.

It doesn't work for me, it tries to open OpenJKDF2, it gets some errors and it closes
