Introduction
So you’re minding your own business raising your WarGrowlmon, trying to evolve it into a Megidramon. You’ve gotten it all the way to max level, so you figure it should be able to evolve by now. You head to the DigiLab, choose Digivolve/De-Digivolve, and select WarGrowlmon, but when you scroll down to Megidramon...

Dang, so close! But what the heck is this “ABI” anyway? You check WarGrowlmon’s stat page to see if it gives you any clues.

...Huh. So it looks like WarGrowlmon only has 26 ABI, whatever that is, but you need to get it to 40. How do you raise it, then?

Stay tuned to find out.
How to Raise ABI
ABI stands for “ability” and can be raised by three methods: evolving, devolving, or using the item Miracle Meat. Unfortunately Miracle Meat is rather hard to come by, especially early on in the game, so you’ll mainly be evolving and devolving.

The higher the level and evolution stage of the Digimon, the more ABI it’ll gain when you evolve or devolve it, and devolving gives roughly twice as much ABI as evolving. There are specific formulas involved but for the purposes of this guide they don’t really matter, as there is no limit to how many times you can evolve/devolve and there is no reason to ever want low ABI.

So now that we know this, we know that we have to evolve or devolve WarGrowlmon to get its ABI up to 40. Luckily, in getting up to max level it reached the requirements for some of its other evolutions, albeit not Megidramon, so we can just evolve it into one of those and then devolve it again to raise its ABI quickly.

Hey, look, our ABI is now high enough! Now we just have to level it back up, and…

There we go, one Megidramon acquired.
Effects of ABI
But surely ABI isn’t just a stat to gate off evolutions, right? Surely it must have some other effect.

Allow me to introduce you to your new best friend: the DigiFarm.

You probably poked around in the farm once, maybe dropped some Digimon in there and told them to train, then never used it again. Well, get ready to use it a lot more because the DigiFarm is the key to unlocking the true potential of ABI.

You know that training command we mentioned?

You probably know this, but not only does it give your Digimon experience, it also gives them “bonus stats” that are added onto the stats they naturally gain from leveling. This isn’t the only way to gain bonus stats, but it is the easiest, since the alternative – feeding your Digimon certain food items such as Vigor Mushrooms – only becomes readily available at the end of the game and even then is quite expensive. The amount of bonus stats a Digimon has had invested into a stat is shown in parentheses to the right of that stat.

Note that the numbers shown on the left are the final stats, with the bonuses already included. (And if you check your Digimon’s stats during battle, it will show its current stats with any boosts or drops factored in.) Also, bonuses from items are shown in the parentheses as well, so don’t get them confused with your bonuses from training.

If you just click train when your Digimon has an ABI of 0, you will only be able to add a total of 50 points to that Digimon’s stats, no matter how long or how many times it trains.

If you raise your Digimon’s ABI, though, then you will be able to add 1 more point for every 2 points of ABI. The maximum ABI is 200, which equates to a total of 150 points, if you include the 50 you get for free.

So, by evolving and devolving our Megidramon a bunch more until his ABI is up at 200, we can unlock his full potential. But, then… how do we go about allocating those points? What determines where they go?

It all depends on personality.
How to Train Your Dramon
If you take another look at Megidramon’s stat page, you’ll see that he has a “Fighter” personality. This is just one of eight possible personalities, which are assigned when the Digimon is converted from scan data, but can also be changed using “Patch” items. Each personality, with the exception of a couple, focuses on enhancing a specific stat. The eight personalities are:

  • Durable: Enhances HP
  • Lively: Enhances SP
  • Fighter: Enhances ATK
  • Defender: Enhances DEF
  • Brainy: Enhances INT
  • Nimble: Enhances SPD
  • Builder: Improves development times in the DigiFarm
  • Searcher: Improves investigation times in the DigiFarm

Builder and Searcher aside, each personality increases its associated stat (including bonus stats, but excluding equipment bonuses) by 5%, and it also sets that stat as the one that will be increased during farm training. Additionally, the leader’s personality causes all other Digimon in that island to shift some of their growth to whichever stat it’s associated with. You will still get the same amount of total growth per training session, though, so it won’t help you max out your stats any quicker.

Since our Megidramon is a Fighter, that means it’ll gain ATK when trained in the farm, which is perfect for Megidramon. Megidramon is a bit slow, though, so let’s plan to put, say, 30 points into its SPD, and the rest into ATK.

A couple of patches and training sessions later, and…

Ta da! Our bloodthirsty dragon is done and ready to go.

And it’s all possible thanks to ABI.

@Cyber Cenobite not directly, but their overall stats will rise if you remember to regularly cycle your party digimon with farm digimon for training

So let me get this straight. You wanna regularly de-evolve your digimon to make this stat go up.

Do their other stats go up as well?

grinding for ABI becomes easy when you find a good grind spot and a few mons who just one shot best spots to grind imo are the Tokyo Metropolian building and Odaiba

@HeikoFennec it's 150 total bonus points for the entire Digimon, not per stat. So you can have 150 in one stat, or 25 in every stat.

Is there any good place for farming Miracle Meat that you know of? I'm playing the Hackers Memory story for reference. About to do the coding tournament part of the story.
