Workshop: How to create a weapon (Quick Extended Guide)

This guide is just what valve missed to add in their faq.

Since a lot people ask me how to submit weapon and why they can't submit weapon i decide to make one short guide on how to do that.

This guide is about how to understand .tga files and how to create a patterns. So this is short quick guide for people who have troubles with that, maybe in future i'll make a guide how to create a nice looking weapon but for now you will have to do it on your own.

No. 1 - Learn basics
Well, first of all you must read the complete FAQ from Counter-Strike blog because it will teach you how to use: workbench, what are patterns give you examples.

Don't miss the Gettting Started steps, because you won't be able to follow next steps.
No. 2 - Download Resources
Resources, will help you and provide you the important elements such as UV sheets, Models and Examples. But remember patterns from examples won't works when you try to save it because it's just an valve example.


Later, we will focus on UV sheets and Models.
No. 3 - Image editor
Ok, this step is about patterns, we saw that we can't make an good skin without having patterns.

Patterns can be a normal images from google(but in that case you may have problems with copyrights.), also you can search for patterns instead on http://deviantart.com and there are free to use patterns which you could use. But the best thing is to use the one which you've created.

When you download the pattern image or create it, now you need image editor program such as photoshop. You can use some free programs but remember they must have .tga extension when you try to save image.

    So for image width and height i mostly use 512x512 pixels.

    How to save image:
  • Open image with one of programs which you have(or download)
  • For most programs it's File -> Save as ->
  • Targa (*.tga, .vda, .icb*)
  • Save it on atleast 24bits/pixels.
You're done for now, you have a half pattern image(.vtf).
No. 4 - Valve Texture Editor(.vtf)
Now, when we created .tga image for the pattern we have to convert it to Valve Texture Editor(.vtf).

For that we have to download VTFEdit v1.3.3 Full from Nem's Tools[nemesis.thewavelength.net]

After installing the program, on desktop drag the .tga file which you have in VTFEdit.exe program

It will automatically open and just click OK when pop-up window appear. Now, after that go File -> Save as -> name.vtf

YOU'RE DONE, YOU HAVE THE PATTERN NOW.

Now when open the workshop_workbench load the pattern and you will see the differences.
No. 5 - Final step
So now when you save your gun and click submit (you've learn it from fist step guide) it will open automatically Counter Strike: GO SDK, and you have to put the following things:

1. Title: Name of your weapon.
2. Description: Describe your weapon.
3. Workbench.txt: It's the file you saved after you created the weapon.
4. Source Image: You got it from step 2 when you downloaded the resource packs find
UVSheets and just pick the weapon which you want to publish.
5. Valve Texture Format: Image which we created using VTFEdit find it and put it.
6. Preview Image: It should be random image how your weapon look.


And that's it if everything went fine, you've sucessfully submited your skin!

Using GIMP VTF plugin?
Be sure you're using GIMP 2.8.0

Workaround "GIMP Tools" > "GIMP 2.8.x" of the wiki

Use .tga or .tiff image types instead of .jpg or .PNG They're lossless and supports alpha. More info in the Valve Source SDK Doc

3D = Use Blender with GIMP. Formost accurate lighting, use in-game workbench
Non-GIMP Users I recommend reading the Valve SDK Docs for better understanding
