Could explain how a player (of this hypothetical sidequel/sequel) would end up going through this area. Perhaps being trapped into the area.

This makes me think about some scientist that got trapped in the chemical storage and went mad from the gas and chemicals in there and is tranfurring anything he see's. Just like a mad despair hangs around the place.
