Check Steam Chat History
Vytvořil: flamey
This guide will be helpful to those who would like to find their old chat logs with users who are and are not on their friend list. This will be especially useful to people who trade and need evidence of chat logs to either prove that someone is scamming or for other trading reasons.

Since I am a TF2 trader, this guide is listed on the TF2 community, but of course this can be applied to any user on steam.

Please correct me if I miswrote or misunderstood something, I am open to criticism and will hopefully correct my mistakes.

How to Check Steam Chat History
Many users do not know this but you can easily check your latest or old chat log from Steam through their support section which is linked HERE. You have to be logged into Steam to be able to access the information. I suggest bookmarking this page if you think it is really useful for future use! You could also your chat log from the Steam app, however you wouldn't be able to check the ones with people you are unfriended with so I suggest using the site to do that instead. If I am looking for something neat and organized, I prefer the site over the Steam app.

The site will show you the information on the "Sender", "Recipient", "Time Sent" and "Message" regarding your chat log. There is a "Load more" button located at the bottom of the site for users to check more old messages. The messages are aligned according to individual users.

Please be aware that messeges are purged from Steam's system 14 days after they were first sent. Messages that are purged in this way have been deleted in their entirety and thus can't be recovered. If your account's chat history is blank, that either means that the account has never sent or received chat messages, or that the messages were 14 days old and have been deleted. (This is according to Steam's staff and also their website on the chat update.)
Why is this Useful?
This is useful to users in the community especially those who trade frequently. Some situations where you can use this are shown below:

1. You recently got scammed, you know that you can get evidence through your chat log that a certain user scammed you. However, the scammer removed and blocked you so you cannot access your chat log directly from the friends list. Therefore, you can use the site provided above to check your previous chat logs so that you can get a screenshot of the proof and make a report about the scammer.

2 and More: Will be added later!
Rate and Favourite Would be Appreciated!

Thank you to those who read the guide!

Hey there! First of all, is the one specific friend you are referring to the most recent friend you talked to on steam? Secondly, how long was it since you talked to the scammer? If it was over 14 days the chats may have been purged. There’s no clear explanation for this, but for some people they can see messages with people who they’ve previously unfriended which is up to several years old and sometimes Steam randomly cuts off the chat at some point, especially if you chat with them often.

I think I've said pretty much everything experience-wise. I'm no tech savvy if that's what you meant. I just know that with the Steam app I can see much further back than on the desktop application.
