START A NEW RUN > HUGE MISPLAY > ABANDON TIMELINE > REPEAT

Into the Breach to me is best described as a game about solving a series of increasingly complex endgame chess puzzles. You play on an 8x8 board, pitting three of your own pieces, each with their own unique moveset, against many more enemy pieces that also have different moves. The board also features other objectives, terrain, and hazards that you as the squad's commander need to keep in mind when planning your moves.

The devs wisely made Into the Breach a perfect information game. Every enemy move is telegraphed, and there is very little left up to chance in your missions. You know exactly what is going to happen when you end your turn the enemy takes theirs. Which is great because it means that the 200 IQ move you spent the last few minutes thinking up can't ever get ruined by Shadowheart missing Fire Bolt bad RNG.

The game really shines when you sit for a long while, analyzing a seemingly unwinnable situation, only to find some new move you hadn't yet considered and get through the mission by the skin of your teeth. Throw in a bunch of unique pilots with different strengths and tons of possible upgrades for your mechs and each run feels super unique and exciting.
