Dead by Daylight, developed by Behaviour Interactive, once stood as a paragon of asymmetrical multiplayer horror games. Its unique blend of suspense, strategy, and adrenaline-pumping chases garnered a dedicated player base, including myself. However, over time, this once-thrilling game has seen a decline in enjoyment and balance, leading to a more frustrating and less engaging experience for many players.

When Dead by Daylight was first released in 2016, it was a breath of fresh air in the multiplayer horror genre. The concept of one player assuming the role of a ruthless killer while four others played as survivors trying to escape created a dynamic and tense gameplay loop. The thrill of being hunted, the strategic depth of evading capture, and the cooperative aspect of working with fellow survivors to complete objectives were captivating. Each match was unpredictable, driven by the diverse strategies of both killers and survivors.

In its early years, Dead by Daylight was praised for its balance. Both killers and survivors had tools and tactics at their disposal to ensure fair play. The game was meticulously designed to ensure that neither side felt overwhelmingly powerful. This balance fostered a sense of fairness and competition, making every victory hard-earned and satisfying. The variety of killers, each with unique abilities, and the ever-expanding roster of survivors kept the game fresh and engaging.

However, as the game evolved, a shift in balance began to emerge. Updates and changes intended to refine gameplay and address issues inadvertently started to favor killers. New mechanics, perks, and killer abilities introduced over time have increasingly tilted the scales in favor of the killer role. This shift has led to a growing sentiment among the player base that the game is becoming more killer-sided, detracting from the enjoyment of playing as a survivor.

One significant factor contributing to this imbalance is the introduction of powerful new killers with abilities that can feel overwhelming and difficult to counter. Additionally, changes to existing mechanics, such as generator repair times and survivor healing, have made it more challenging for survivors to achieve their objectives. This has resulted in a gameplay experience where survivors often feel powerless and outmatched, leading to frustration and diminishing the fun that was once synonymous with the game.

The decline in enjoyment is further exacerbated by the repetition and predictability that have set in over time. What was once an unpredictable and dynamic experience has become routine. The thrill of the chase and the tension of narrowly escaping the killer's grasp have given way to a sense of monotony. The game's core mechanics, while innovative at launch, have not evolved enough to maintain the same level of excitement for long-time players.

In addition to gameplay balance issues, the community's experience has been impacted by toxic behavior and a lack of meaningful engagement from the developers. Toxicity, in the form of unsportsmanlike conduct and negative interactions, has become more prevalent, contributing to an overall decline in the enjoyment of matches. Furthermore, a perceived lack of responsiveness from the developers to community feedback and concerns has left many players feeling unheard and disillusioned.

In conclusion, Dead by Daylight's journey from a thrilling, balanced horror experience to its current state of imbalance and monotony is a testament to the challenges of maintaining long-term player engagement in a multiplayer game. While the game still has a dedicated player base and moments of excitement, the shift towards a more killer-sided experience and the resulting frustration have dampened the enjoyment for many, including myself. It is my hope that future updates and changes will address these issues, restoring the balance and excitement that made Dead by Daylight a standout title in the multiplayer horror genre.
