During the First Crusade, Crusaders faced extreme hunger and hardship during sieges, including at Jerusalem. This severe deprivation led some Crusaders to cannibalism, a desperate act for survival when they lacked food. Several chroniclers describe how hunger drove them to consume the bodies of fallen enemies. Additionally, some reports suggest that the Crusaders may have used this act as psychological warfare, aiming to instill fear among the Muslim defenders by demonstrating a terrifying level of determination.

It was interpreted at the time as a mark of the Crusaders' desperation and a testament to the brutality of siege warfare. Their extreme actions at Jerusalem and other sites were driven by the harsh realities of medieval warfare, where prolonged starvation and supply shortages sometimes forced people to cross moral boundaries simply to survive.
