Forza Horizon 4
In my opinion, most racing games are now a slight shadow of what they used to be. Once incredibly great, the NFS series has turned into a piece of garbage, where developers, instead of trying to make a decent game, have made non-playable garbage for children, where ‘incredible’ effects appear on half the display, and car physics don't exist at all. I'm not even talking about The crew and other popular games that even now cannot surpass the level of NFS Most Wanted. Even F1 Sim is getting worse and worse since the 2021 version, although it's still the best simulator and racing game in overall. My criteria for racing games are always high, I mean, I evaluate these games based on the experience I gained playing the ‘origins’, such as the first NFS games, which were incredibly good at that time, and some of them even now.

When I first installed Forza Horizon 5 on Xbox, I was sceptical about the game. But my expectations were false. The game turned out to be decent, not without its flaws, but decent enough. After learning about the upcoming termination of sales of Forza Horizon 4, I instantly bought this game, expecting the game to be on the same level as Forza Horizon 5. Were my speculations right? I guess so.

  1. Graphics
Graphics in FH4 are fairly good for a 2018 game. Good car detalisation, beautiful landscapes, little things like weather changes and weather conditions overall - everything is at a solid, if not high level. But the fact is that the game has some optimisation issues. Starting with game crashes and ending with connection issues and unstable FPS, in my opinion, such things should have been already fixed by now.
  2. Gameplay
This game is a ‘’entertain yourself‘’ game. You can turn the game into the most arcade racing game for an absolute beginner or turn it into something like a light/medium car simulator. No main story, different types of races, different cars, season changes each week (a good aspect of the game that gives a bit of diversity), a pleasant map of Edinburgh and its region make a good impression while playing. The physics of cars is decent. Sometimes it may not seem realistic, especially on cars that are not suitable for racing, but mostly the developers have maintained good physics of cars and the environment. Everything may seem good enough to actually love this game. The only problem is online. For me, most of the online sessions were pretty good, but there are still moments with long waits to find opponents or just some events that are boring. This exists in most similar games, but it is still there.
  3. Sound design
Compared to the FH5, the FH4 has a worse sound. I don't mean that it's bad, it's just that when I first started FH4 and played for the first two hours, I always thought FH5 had better sound. However, this is some of the best sound work I've ever experienced in a racing game. The new sounds in FH5 just have more depth, whereas in FH4 it seems more robotic.

Conclusion
Forza Horizon 4 is definitely worth playing. It is a good racing game that can drag you away for several dozen hours. But in my opinion, if you have an opportunity to play Forza Horizon 5 instead of 4, do it. FH5 is really better in some main aspects.

If you're planning to buy a game during a sale and wanna get the standard edition and expand the game later through DLCs like a complete add-on pack or full set, my strong advice: save up a bit and get the ultimate edition, its much cheaper.
