After nearly a year since I last played OMORI, I’ve realized that this is how a game should handle a subject such as childhood trauma. From its ability to still remain somber with its subject material & still have enough side content to not be overly depressing. Its somewhat crude-hand drawn style accompanied with its music is what I feel makes this game timeless, especially with it somewhat reminding of my own childhood. The music especially, as it is somehow able to match also any part of the game perfectly, while still remaining strong just by itself. I find this to be especially apparent with the boss & faraway songs, all of which go so much harder than they have any right to.

The first day Sunny awakes from his bed is one of the best ways of introducing a passage of time, as everything before that was previously introduced about the main characters is immediately flipped on its head (aside from Kel). Especially with Aubrey, as she goes into a violent emotional wreck, while starting off as the exact opposite. As almost any character traits previously held in Headspace are no longer present when Sunny exits his house for the first time. With the game’s lack of flashbacks & almost pure reliance on dialogue setting up the previous character traits naturally. This creates a feeling I find barely any games or other forms of media are able to recreate.
Every single main character I find has enough details to make you invested in them, without having to give off an entire backstory to accomplish it. Even many of the side characters, (primarily in Aubrey’s gang) also have enough traits to separate them from just a generic NPC. Even with characters like Hero, which would be considered 1 dimensional with how they're written in the past & somewhat in the present, is eventually given more character clues if you go looking for them. This all comes together to create an atmosphere that truly parrales & is applicable to almost anyone's life in one form or another.

(SPOILERS) I find the way the antagonist SOMETHING is written perfectly represents how both Basil & Sunny view their trauma. From his appearances being little more than a simple puzzle, with it being hard for them to kill you without a lot of time devoted, & yet both Sunny and Basil still fear it. This shows how, while he may not be much of a threat, he still manages to influence their actions, especially in the end of the good route.
The only parts which I didn't feel held up to the standard set by every other part, are things like Black Space & a bit of the horror. Manly because I find its set pieces to be too confusing to be able to tie it back to the main game. The only exception to this I feel is the Stranger, as they outright tell you what each one might represent.

(SPOILERS) the way each route ends & the endings themselves are all unique in the ways you can accomplish them (excluding the good ending). The fact that going the Hikikomori route results in the same amount of gameplay content as the Sunny route, is something I’ve never seen in any other game I’ve played. This is especially unique as only about 7.1% of the player base has ever seen the end to the Hikikomori route. The way the Sunny route ends with a flashback through every single memory present in the photo book, & to eventually leave it open-ended while still feeling satisfied is truly an achievement. The fact that you can see the consequences of your actions before this I feel is also something that complements the Hikikomori route, as you see what happens if you don’t save Basil, & choose to live in constant apathy.

Ultimately, the fact that OMOCAT was able to jam this much detail into a game that takes little more than 20 hours to beat is something that I feel should be followed by many others. This is because I feel that quantity over quality is something that is being somewhat forgotten in many of the big studios’ stories. Combine this with the fact that this entire game was created in RPG maker of all things, just goes to show how it doesn’t take much to convey a truly captivating story.

All of these things is why this game has pervaded in my mind for almost a year, as my mind is unable to stop thinking about it even today. From the story, to the characters, & especially the setting & theming, it has never failed to be something I would call a masterpiece.
