Definitely has a learning curve for beginners. The first few weeks of playing, I was put on "prison" but after more than a hundred hours in the game I can say that there's still soooo much more to learn. As a popular game that's easy to pick, you simply can't win matches by winging it. One needs to read strategies, watch videos, and have an enduring patience for nasty players who would endlessly egg on you during the early stages. It does get rewarding once you start winning more matches.
