Macbeth’s character in Shakespeare's play Macbeth is a character one of which is established as a man who seeks power and royalty with more or less moral intentions. Macbeth is not truly doomed by fate, but by his primary character flaws such as his unbridled ambition, his credulity, and his love and trust in Lady Macbeth which leads to tragic followings. Macbeth is shown at the beginning of the play that he is easily persuaded by Lady Macbeth. His ambition is the main aspect that leads to his downfall and the credulity he demonstrates does not help in any way. It can be argued that the influence of the three witches or lady Macbeth exert a certain influence on him, or he is doomed by fate, but in the end his it is his own character flaws that are the cause of his tragic end.
In addition to retaining the ambition Macbeth described earlier in the play, the very first scene of act four seems to show that he is also somewhat credulous, even gullible. This is a trait that we've seen before, however. In Act One, for example, as soon as Macbeth found out that he'd been named Thane of Cawdor, as the Weird Sisters promised, he believed in their prophecies whole-heartedly and never seemed to doubt their motives. Despite their obvious otherworldliness, Macbeth believes them without reservation. After Macbeth returns and learns he has been declared the Thane of Cawdor he says, “Two truths are told, as happy prologues to the swelling act, of th’imperial theme.” (1.3) Macbeth immediately believes that since the witches declared he would become Thane of Cawdor that also meant their prophecy of him becoming king would also be true showing his credulous character flaw.
All violent acts, even such done for selfless reasons, seem to lead inevitably to the next. So Macbeth had been doomed by Lady Macbeth and must act upon violence, and more violence until violence is all he has left. As Macbeth himself says after seeing Banquo's ghost, "blood will to blood." Violence leads to violence, a vicious cycle.
Macbeth's trait of ambition at the beginning of the play is his biggest weapon, but in the end, it is his worst enemy. When contemplating the murder of Duncan Macbeth says, “I have no spur To prick the sides of my intent, but only vaulting ambition, which o’erleaps itself, and falls on th’other.” (1.7) Macbeth is comparing his ambition to horse riding, telling how a horse rider will attempt to jump an obstacle to large and will end up falling down. When Macbeth convinces himself to the murder of Duncan, it triggers this reversal of this ambition and what he told himself and leads to all the other murders in the story. Murder becomes his main weapon and his ambition is now focused on taking out whoever opposes him or anyone he sees as a threat to his throne rather than his initial ideology.
Macbeth’s character flaws were his ambition, credulity, and love, all in all creating his inflated ego of succumbing to the influences of others, which produced a negative outlook of his own fate and his accountability to it. With the combination of Lady Macbeth's persuasion and his trusting in the witches predicting his fate, Macbeth's profound ambition caused him to trip over his own feet and fall to a point where he could never return to his past self.
