I originally played this during a free week/weekend in the middle of this year, and I really enjoyed it. Despite this, I never actually bought the game until today, which I actually regretted. This game is really fun and addictive and requires decent strategy and shooting skills. It's also a game that I've been really wanting to play again, and I've not been disappointed.

I know the steam charts say that it doesn't have many players, but this doesn't really impact the queue times as the matches are 1v1 or 2v2; due to each player ending up with two clones, in addition to their character, by the end of a round, it would be too chaotic to make a match of a size larger than perhaps 3v3.

I've had a lot of fun, and it would be great for the devs to get more support for this game. If you're not entirely sure how it works, there's a youtube video by Corridor Digital that is almost exactly the same. Check it out; it's called Clockblockers.

So I bought this game on sale and played it on the same day.
Holy crap this game is amazing. I played two hours, and it is already one of my favourite games. Besides, it's kinda fun to kill-steal and watch your friends get salty. It's an added bonus.

So, in short, this game makes one player a human and the others ghosts who can summon and control minions or possess traps and items lying around (possess a chest to become an OP mimic). Anyone who kills the human becomes human. You race to get to level 10 and kill the boss. Between everyone, you only have three tries, and anyone who fails the third try loses. 1st place then goes to the highest level player who didn't just die to the boss the last time. If you beat the boss, you win.

Oh, and by the way, the boss is controlled by the other players. Some friends may delight in being able to turn your human character into a chicken, spew laser beams, cover you in acid, etc.


As a side note, it's also insanely fun to play as a freaking tadpole and murder someone because they can't catch you. You can also kill-steal with ranged traps or slimes.

10/10 would troll with tadpole again

This game is a lot better than people give it credit for. Yeah, it's not perfect. It did just come out. Typically bugs crop up when that happens. However, the devs really are pushing to get bug fixes out really quickly. Yes, I know the launch day wasn't great, and the servers were pretty laggy, but honestly, it's much better now.
Also, some people complain about optimisation. I'm pretty sure it'll get upgraded over time, but for now, the game still runs pretty smoothly. Besides, the environments look great.

So I haven't played long enough to comment much on power balance and whatnot, but from what I can tell during fights with other players, when each character is used correctly, they'll be a force to be reckoned with. It's just a matter of learning each character.

So, yeah, this game is fun. It may be a bit rough around the edges, but it's definitely capable of delivering on the gameplay. Yes, there's not in-game text or voice chat yet. That'll get fixed. Besides, what happens often in games with those is that the chat either doesn't get used or gets bogged down by salt. Maybe they were just trying to get rid of the salt. (Random guess that could very well be wrong, but I'm willing to give the devs the benefit of the doubt.)

So, yeah. I know that the community is apparently dying, but just before writing this, I got a bunch of matches with only a wait time of a minute or two at most, with the wait typically being less than a minute. Honestly, I'm excited that I got to play for a while without having to sit for ages, and I look forward to the possibility in the future.

Verdict: 7.5 or 8 out of 10... No, seriously, I'm not joking. I actually like this game.

People are probably going to hate on me for that, but whatever.

I am writing this review after beating the main campaign and both story dlcs on all difficulties, doing the main quests and most of the side quests. It took me 159hrs and 14min; I played a decent amount offline, hence the time discrepancy. This game has a lot of content and build diversity. In short, it is one of my favourite ARPGs of all time, if not my favourite. 10/10.

The game is set in a grim-dark post-apocalyptic world filled with magical enemies: beasts, spirits, demons, eldritch monstrosities and more. The story is typical of this and is adequate, with plenty of interesting lore interspersed throughout the game. The gameplay is where this game really shines.

The buildcrafting functions similarly to that of Titan Quest: You take two classes and mix them together. There are some interesting combinations--my main character's being the Occultist and Necromancer classes (Cabalist) for minion spam--but on top of this, you also get passive abilities by restoring shrines. These passives are separate from your class, but you can attach many of them to abilities, including minion abilities, allowing them to have a chance to activate with said abilities. This allows for a very squishy necromancer-occultist to become a facetanking nightmare, if combined with the right gear. And the gear is extremely variewd. There are mythic and legendary items (second highest and highest rarity items, respectively), which provide the usual slew of bonuses but also skills (either activating automatically with certain conditions or when you choose, depending on the item). On top of this, you can enchant your gear with a plethora of attachments, which can also grant you more skills.

So, you have classes, blessings for restoring shrines, gear, and gear enchantments. With the random drops (and with certain monsters dropping specific gear, too), you can really customise your play style as you wish. And, certain green items (the rarity below mythic) with rolls much more randomised than mythic and legendary items can have such good stats that they are better than any legendary items and can even define builds.

Then there is the combat. If your build has flaws, the combat will suck once you hit Elite difficulty (NG+), and you will again get floored by Ultimate difficulty (NG++). As a tip, focus on your resistances first once you prepare to enter Elite difficulty, and again before entering Ultimate difficulty. If your build is good, you can absolutely stomp through hordes, and it is so satisfying. Learning what works and what doesn't, how to adjust your build and how to use your kit in a way that uniquely suits you, is truly addictive. When I bought this game years ago, I played 33hrs in three days, which was not a good idea at the time but was ridiculously fun.

The graphics are nothing special, being somewhat outdated, but they are certainly sufficient given that you should probably zoom out anyway for better battlefield awareness. This game is also fairly well optimised and can run on older PCs, including my old, trash laptop that just had its basic GPU.

So, if you are looking for a solid ARPG with interesting lore, an intriguing and dark atmosphere, amazing and top-tier build-crafting and build variety, and solid combat (albeit with a learning curve at higher difficulties), pick up Grim Dawn. It goes on sale fairly often for quite low prices, but it is absolutely worth full price.

As an aside, once you beat the main campaign on Ultimate difficulty, you can go to the Forgotten God's DLC location and buy a consumable that can transfer to another character. The consumable levels up a new character and puts them into ultimate difficulty immediately. You can also use the Crucible DLC for a new character to get an easy boost to early levels. So, both story DLCs and the Crucible are worth it.
