Misleading, false advertising & pretentious plot
TL;DR

In the beginning you start in a murky cabin and a creepy figure introduces you to the card game.

It lays down an interactive map and you start playing.

During your time playing you will stumble upon events that force you to make tough choices and the creepy figure wears uncanny masks to act like characters and narrates the story.

There are a lot of things that I liked:

- Some animal cards are alive and talk to the player
- The player can leave the table and explore the cabin
- Whenever the creepy figure switches to a character, the music changes too.
- One wrong move could be fatal

PLOT TWIST: All of that was just arc 1.

The entire store page only shows you pictures, videos and trailers of what happens in the first arc.

After beating the creepy figure, everything changes for the worse.

The plot, the music, the entire game turns from 3D to 2D, changes which nobody asked or paid for.

All your expectation, excitement and imagination how you could possibly escape the cabin goes down the drain and you get introduced to new rules and new plots that are terrible than the one you experienced in the beginning. The whole concept of the cabin has been thrown into the trash.

But let's lets look what's written on the store page again:

From the creator of Pony Island and The Hex comes the latest mind melting, self-destructing love letter to video games. Inscryption is an inky black card-based odyssey that blends the deckbuilding roguelike, escape-room style puzzles, and psychological horror into a blood-laced smoothie. Darker still are the secrets inscribed upon the cards...

In Inscryption you will...

1 Acquire a deck of woodland creature cards by draft, surgery, and self mutilation
2 Unlock the secrets lurking behind the walls of Leshy's cabin
3 Embark on an unexpected and deeply disturbing odyssey

The reason why it's misleading and false advertising is not only because that they didn't show the second and third arc, it's because the second arc is a completely different game and the third is a watered down version of the first arc.

Arc 2 is a 2D game and looks and plays similiar like pokemon from the old days but where is the

"escape-room style puzzles, the psyochological horror into blood-laced smoothie"??

1. Arc 2 added more creatures that aren't "woodland creatures" and there's no violence, events, let alone self mutilation which made the game dark and interesting to begin with. Everything they advertised was a sham!

2 "Secrets lurking behind the walls of Leshy's cabin" There was no secret, they just made you play a different game than what they advertised. They completely dropped the whole concept of the cabin.

That alone was a huge disappointment and I felt like I had to sit through while playing arc 2&3

3. "Embark on an unexpected and deeply disturbing odyssey." I really did not expect that they would make me play a completely different game that nobody asked for but what's worse is that the second and third arc wasn't even mildly disturbing at all.

The things I liked are gone:

- Animal cards that talk to the player are gone
- The player can't leave the table in arc 2 since the whole cabin concept is gone.
- No creepy figure, no horror, no events, no cabin
- If you lose, nothing happens and you can just talk them again until you win.

No more dying, no horror and completely lackluster plot than what happens in the first arc.

Arc 3 suddenly switched from 2D back to 3D again but instead of a cabin you play in a factory against a robot

Once again the player gets introduce to a new plot, rules and cards but they are awful, lackluster and there's no horror, creepy figure, self mutilation etc. Every screenshot, video and trailer was just arc 1.

The third arc's game mechanic was ridiculously boring and repetitive unlike the first arc.

It could have been a good game if they kept it simple. If they had only advertised it what it really was instead of lying to us and give us the false expectation that it was all about being trapped in a cabin, playing cards against our captor and that we could escape somehow.

But instead we have a game that started good, but then suddenly changed completely just to tell a pretentious plot that sounded as if an obnoxious kid tried retell it, who also kept adding new rules, unnecessary cards and removed interesting mechanics which made the first arc interesting in the first place.

TL;DR: Trailer, videos, pictures gave a false expectation that it was all about being trapped in a cabin, playing cards against our captor and that we could escape somehow.

But after the first arc the whole game concept gets thrown into the trash, you play a pokemon like 2D game and the third arc is a watered down version of the first arc but without any of the cool features, characters and events. The plot is pretentious and cringe worthy.

Watch on youtube arc 2 & 3 before considering to buy it.

There's a reason why they didn't show it. What a shameless way to sell a game.

What could have been a fun and casual game has been ruined by tedious game mechanics and questionable level design that just end up wasting your time.

I am Fish looks great but after the first fish, it becomes a hard, tedious slog of a game.

What makes it worse is that they have so many checkpoints next to each other that is borderline insulting to the player and they even added a button to skip to the next checkpoint which just makes you wonder why they didn't just improved the game mechanic instead of letting you fail so often until you make it.

Don't let the nice animation fool you. After the goldfish, the rest of the levels become unnecessary hard and tedious.

I am Fish ended up not being fun and makes me feel like I just wasted my time.

I wouldn't recommend it to adults, let alone a kid who wants to play something casual and fun.

Now that I beat it, I'm glad I can uninstall it and I don't want to play it ever again.
