A once a beloved staple of every kid's childhood, now a horrendous pay-to-win fest. What happened?

I remember the days when I played this game on my phone, infatuated like many others. Among the likes of Plants vs. Zombies, Clash of Clans, and Cut the Rope, Pixel Gun 3D (PG3D) stood out as my most-played game. Its story, game modes, guns – there was so much to do, and I enjoyed every bit of it. The memories are vivid; I'll never forget the chills I got on the forest level, hiding under my bedsheets to not wake my parents when I'd get scared.

When news of its port emerged, nostalgia hit hard. I eagerly awaited its release, and on the 2nd of April, I was there, ready to relive those moments. However, when booting it up, the game had changed significantly. The once-familiar landscape was now inundated with pop-ups, buttons, and flashing exclamation marks. Despite the overwhelming interface, I was still excited to dive in. But... my excitement was quickly gone. It took only three games for me to realise something was off. I kept getting killed, without much of an opportunity to fight back. Initially, I chalked it up to rustiness and skill issue, but soon, it became apparent that wasn't the case. I was consistently outgunned by players with far better weapons. Even after purchasing some of these supposedly better guns, the outcome remained unchanged. This was due to the introduction of gun levels, where the disparity between different levels was game changing.

The biggest issue: P2W Takeover

For those unfamiliar, pay-to-win (P2W) allows players to gain a tactical advantage through in-game purchases. PG3D has become one of the worst offenders of this practice. Unable to beat someone with better gear? Simply level it up. But acquiring enough coins to do so? Just play more – a vicious cycle that coerces players into purchasing discounted in-game currency to even be able to experience the game. This is when i decided to switch to the battle royale game mode. Surely this was safe from fun levels and allowed players an equal playing field where skill was the biggest factor... right?

Battle Royale: More RNG than Skill

Loading into the battle royale gamemode, it wasnt too bad. I jumped out of the flying vehicle and landed on the map, even getting a few kills on player who landed around me. I was actually having fun, and while the 3rd person perspective was jarring, i was actually able to play the game. Maybe this would be the gamemode id enjoy and play and have fun with, and maybe this game w... Dead. Full health, full shields, once shot by some gun i had never seen. What I hoped would be a level battlefield turned out to be a testament to luck rather than skill. Surviving early game only to be one-shotted by a hopping player across the map felt frustrating and unfair. I didn't give up, but this cycle occurred until I got an op weapon, in which I more than comfortably won the game. Where in normal game modes there was power creep, and over levelled weapons, in this there was just plain unfair weapons, and the difference between one and the other was stupidly staggering.

Nostalgia Bait

Many players currently enjoying the game might be clouded by nostalgia or enticed by the promise of reliving their childhood memories. The game's marketing capitalises on this sentiment, but it fails to convey the stark differences from the original version. The description starts with: "The legendary mobile multiplayer FPS Pixel Gun 3D comes to PC", insinuating the legendary game that once was is now on pc. The truth is, its not. The game I once loved is gone, replaced by a mere shadow of its former self.

My problem is NOT specifically with the PC port, however what can be done to improve the game?

To clarify, my annoyance with the game isn't specifically with the PC port. I understand the need to update, change and improve to keep the game alive. My concern is the game's current state as a whole, whether on PC or mobile, which has devolved into a pay-to-win nightmare. Focus on balance and identity. Consider reverting the style and guns or provide OG players with access to an older build, similar to what Fortnite did.

Conclusion

To fellow old Pixel Gun players, I advise against playing this version. Don't let a quick cash grab tarnish your cherished memories. As for those with a lot of money, go ahead, indulge – this game is tailor-made for you.

Comments are enabled, and I look forward to hearing everyone's thoughts on this game in its current state.

Best and most innovative rhythm game I've played in a while. After beating the first boss, I must say i love this game's aesthetic, soundtrack and idea. Plus, the guitars that kick in when you're on a streak is a very nice touch

Amazing. Muse dash, but free, I love the asthetic, music, visuals, colours and the retro-vibe. Has a lot of potential, and cant wait to see it develop. Also funny time played number.
