Stellaris is a pretty fun game, if you're interested in space thematics. It may lack some things, but still you'll enjoy playing it even without mods. Of course, there are some problems, for example: the game is not as enjoyable without DLCs, or some potential might have been lost. But I think that you should give it a try, you'll surely like Stellaris.
