As Elliott Smith said, "You can do what you want to whenever you want to, it doesn't mean a thing. Big nothing..."

My favorite game in years. Bracing bosses belie a leisurely approach to exploration, secret-hunting, and women's literature.

The tone here is pitch-perfect post-meta-- it doesn't particularly "mean anything" that Erina has Amy Rose's hammer or looks like a Touhou, nor do the explicit invocations of Gochiusa or Splatoon or anything else. It's a dreaming amalgam painted in the same hypermedia typically leveraged toward pure, penitent unending wakefulness, cloaking a payload of depleted unreality. As such, it attains all criteria for the highest contemporary art: more radical than difficult, and too good-natured to make a fuss about it. I could go on and on. 5/5. So looking forward to next adventure.

If you welded a very mature, once-in-a-generation lightning-in-a-bottle playstyle to an ecosystem and rotation of gametypes for six year-olds, this is what you would get. Very interesting in this sense, but not destined to leave any meaningful trace on the history of the medium, because even the conspicuous effort that's gone into forcing this meme to term can't possibly be experienced as exceptional. We are watching the collapse of the most lucrative, overinflated entertainment industry ever in real-time, and personally, I couldn't be more thrilled to see what comes next. R.I.P. Halo, and welcome in to whatever is next.

Every story beat in Death Stranding has hit twice as hard on replay-- it was difficult for me to believe, but it really is the sort of thing which reveals mile-deep reservoirs when mirrored back its own vocabulary. It’s his best work, and a fantastic, authentically weird story and cast. Games like this ruin you for any other medium while somehow simultaneously bending over backwards to resurrect narrative. Deliriously good. 5/5 on the video game scale.

I find this game and its prequel detestable. The core mechanic is cool and undeniably compelling. It's also like half a decade old now, and hasn't budged an inch past tech demo. The metafiction is abhorrent and boring (the latter before the former), the aesthetics are self-satisfied and aggressive. At least when a big corporation makes a popular video game they have the self-respect to express something utterly bland, profoundly neutral. This game makes this whole smug procedure of mindrape and isn't even cold enough to enjoy itself. Super hot, indeed. 1/5 stars. There are some people you really just cannot ever tell they did a good thing.

This is arguably a perfect game, and it's tragic.

FFXIII is the best. Deeply underrated. Although it is bad and frustrating in some fundamental ways, the particular ways in which it is wrong and bad is really descriptive of the decade in video games, and in civilization. Strong recommend for egregore vibes
