I guess it needed DirectPlay to work. I have many games on Steam, modern and old and never had this issue before. I requested a refund, as I can not even get the game to start. I loved this game back in the day on the PS1. I was hoping it would work here, even if it did have some issues per other reviews. I recommend it if you can get it to work, without too much trouble and maybe on a decent sale. This was just more hassle than it was worth on my end.

Early Access Review
Couldn't play the game myself. The demo runs decent on LOW settings, but the main game, runs like hot garbage the moment I start the game on my first day. Then again I have a hot garbage PC as well, but it works for quite a few games better looking and more complicated than this. No problems running at MEDIUM to HIGH settings with those games. So that tells me the devs have not optimized the game yet.

It's still Early Access. But the jump from the demo playing just fine, to being basically not playable on the full version was a shock. I still recommend the game, for now. Hopefully the devs can fix it. Make an even lower graphical setting, like HOT GARBAGE for the many of us that have such a system- less graphics, no outside traffic, etc. Otherwise, they miss out on our money as well.

Rental is a cute (slightly horror?) game. Reminded me of Animal Crossings in a way, probably because of the cuteness and how the characters spoke in that chirpy bippitty-bobbitty way. It was a fun and unique experience, at least until the end. What felt like should have been about fifteen minutes tops for the game, ended up being a little over an hour, because of the mirror maze. Although a neat concept, there simply was no way to mark where you had been and no land marks of any kind. I kept coming back to where I started a few times. I was about ready to shut it off, when only by sheer luck did I finally find the exit. There is no way to save. No exiting the game. You have to force your way out in any number of ways and shut the program down. To be honest, I thought me being trapped in the maze was a physiological meaning of the game. I hope me beating it once, did not mean I had to play it again to see the true ending, as there was no notice of that, so off the game went. I recommend it. It's free. It's cute. Just, that maze though... Also it felt like a lot of digs at religion, especially Christianity.

*****Warning***** *****SPOLIERS*****
Restarted the game a few times, thinking I was missing something or the game was broken and it would fix itself upon a fresh restart. I understand it is free. But it's not atmospheric, without actual atmosphere. This felt like a walking simulator, more than anything else. It was boring, confusing and just not fun.

Furthest I got was to the house with a note, with a car parked in the yard, the power station and then the power-lines that keep forcing you back the way you came along the road. You step off the path and you are practically lost. I walked what felt like minutes in one direction and nothing, not even an invisible boundary. Which, by the way, players hate, but sometimes are a necessary evil of game design. Mountains or a cliff side would have been an easy fix to the dilemma. Even a fence. Then trying to go back, you hope you turned 180 degrees to go the way you came and find the road again. Chances are you will not.

Reload a save, instead of starting all over again? It says it does not save. I can not imagine playing this for any length of time, with maybe coming back to it for a few brief moments here and there, to see if I could proceed further. Without the ability to do that, I see no reason to continue with this. It might get better, but not where I was standing. Which was literally in the middle of bum ♥♥♥♥ no where.

I hate not to recommend a free game. I feel like I am being ungrateful, but I just do not see the appeal. Something has to keep the player's attention. Jump scares, that may force your hand to go into a specific direction. Abandoned houses along the way to explore. Birds and squirrels for eye candy. Something... Walking in middle of no where, with nothing but fog in all directions, the occasional tree, a road and power-lines, does not make a fun enthralling game. However, I wish the developer(s) well and they take from this and make something better in the future and get acclaim.

I bought this game and at first had some trouble with it. It's an older game and sadly Steam does not usually keep up with them. Not having the patches ready and all that, straight out of the box, as it were. Plus, in all honesty, I believe the game is just buggy to begin with. Be sure to always have Task Manager be able to be on top of all other programs, or else the game will possibly freeze and freeze somewhat frequently and you will otherwise have no way to get out of the game quickly to get back in again. It is a pretty big annoyance. However, after allowing Task Manager to over ride all other programs, it is a doable, although still an annoying occurrence.

With that out of the way, the game is AMAZING! The size and the scope Unimaginable. You basically start off as a clean slate and can do just about anything you want. Good, Bad, Rogue, Gang Member, Loner, etc. So many perks, skills and ways to play, you could potentially play it indefinitely with different builds. Trudging across the wastelands is an adventure in and of itself. Quests are plentiful. Weapons, gear and gadgets, unfathomable. Creatures so plentiful and bizarre, they are uncountable. Towns spread out, feel real, the people too. There is always something to do. Factions to explore. Story to progress. All in an apocalyptic wasteland.

Get it on sale if you are worried about performance issues. Otherwise, the game is worth every penny and then some. You might want to read up on some of it's perks and skills though. Not sure if all are working properly or if you need a third party patch or something to make them work as intended. Happy hunting!

*****THIS REVIEW HAS SPOILERS*****

The game takes it's graphical cues from the PS1 era. Some may find that endearing, others not so much. The core game play is basically a walking simulator. You walk around and gather clues to proceed. Even if you know you will need something ahead of time on a subsequent play through, you can not do it while out on another quest. It can only be completed in turn. You also do not physically fight anything. You are simply exploring until the last level and then running in the dark confused, turning cranks in puzzle fashion to escape.

And you will spend the most time in that level, as it is the only level to feature something that can actually harm you. And you'll be so lost you wont know where to go until you memorize the layout or understand how to avoid the creature, if it's even possible to avoid. It might just be blind luck and randomness.

If it's on sale for a $1, I'd say go for it. But I wouldn't pay more than that. There are a couple of endings, but the play through is exactly the same, just your very last final choice makes the difference and really not even a difference at that. Personally I really enjoyed the beginning and the creepy atmosphere of the "human" world. I wish we could have stayed longer or ventured more into that. The "lights of the city" having disappeared and the one security guard on the take, as it were, was more interesting to me, then the rest of the game combined.

Game can not presently be played offline. Not even the initial set up and first play online, lets you play offline later. Since I do not have internet at home, this is basically an unplayable game. Do not buy unless you are guaranteed to have internet connection at all times, possibly even a very good one from some posts I've read. There is no excuse for that. I legit bought it on Steam, I should be able to play it legit offline. This is a single player game after all. I am hoping I got this on sale, so I did not lose much money on it, but it is still worthless to me now. it's a shame because the game appears to be great, but if I can not play, I can not recommend. How hard of a fix would it be to allow us to play offline? In fact, I think they went back and changed it so we could not play it offline. That's very underhanded.

Think I paid $1 or $2 for this game on sale and it was well worth it, if you like these type of games. Not much to it, besides trying to race to get the most money and get to the next level. Sticking around one level where possible, to get as much extra stuff as possible, may help in the next level. Each level has a new theme and some do try to be different from one another, usually with a side gig or buying and renting for instance to gain extra cash.

The music is delightful. I generally play till I can have it start refilling the shelves automatically and then I end up doing other things, only coming back to check on the progress and buy upgrades and what not. It's not extraordinarily deep, but it does not have to be. Probably have spent at least ten hours on the game and beat it twice, but since I do most of the gaming off line, Steam will not recognize it. It has only holiday theme of Halloween unfortunately, but it would be nice to have a Christmas, Easter, etc. themes as well.

Would also like to see when buying upgrades or items that are supposed to be kept and actually help you, actually displayed on the store floor or walls (although not extra quantities of them for gameplay sake). Also clicking back onto the play field to refill a shelf, should over ride what ever is in the foreground. I feel like I have one screen up, confused on where I got it from and then click a random one, then that one again to diminish the screen, just to get back into the gameplay. Had it just let me click Storage to grab what ever to fill the shelf to begin with, I feel would make things more user friendly.

Also later levels some customers seem to ignore the later racks of merchandise to the far left. I do not know if they are buying from it or simply can not reach for what ever reason and leave the store. I do not see that happening in the earlier levels. They always go all the way across the floor if the shelf is filled and the product unlocked. Maybe it is a bug? Game has not been updated in a few years. Would be nice to see more levels added or even a way to make our own. Thank you.

Even just one of these games are worth the full price of admission, but you are getting four games. Just one game could potentially last you a life time or at the very least, many years. With games these days, it's rare to find a Dev in the community to help and answer questions, but DSmart actually does that, so that is a plus as well. I'd ask anyone into space or simulation games to give it a try. There are many options to choose from- a captain of a ship, an engineer, a space marine, etc. Travel all over the galaxy in an open world or complete missions. If it doesn't work, as was my case, refund it. But you are doing yourself a massive disservice, if you do not at least once give this a go. Don't let the graphics put you off either, there is a LOT of customization and the older graphics have it's charm. But if you simply can not get past the older graphics, try the other games available from 3000AD.

More like an Episode, than just a mod. This game is jam packed with action, suspense and added features. Take the lead as an Overwatch Elite soldier on a mission to complete what his overloads demand, in order to accomplish somethign meaningful to him. Along the way you will find a whole host of characters that are all very well voice acted. Accompanying music is great. Maps are huge. Gun fights are terrific. There is vehicle driving and tries to show events leading up to the beginning of HL3, from the side of the Combine. Definitely give it a try, it's free.
