A prime example of what happens when a company prioritizes PR and profit maximization over long-term game health and cybersecurity.

Like most games that attract profit, DbD also attracted the wrong kind of attention. Namely hacking and cheating.

In 2019 the game transitioned into a part P2P - part Server online model, with the dedicated servers having virtually no cybersecurity checks and only Hosting the match.

Since then the company had their developer build leaked to the public, implemented MMR and tried to promote the game as an "esport", and past 2020 and through the pandemic the cheating instances went through the roof.

UPDATE: As of March 2024 and the release of the All Things Wicked chapter, players have encountered yet again another massive cheater wave.

This time, even no-clipping + superspeed hacking is back, one of the very first vulnerabilities allegedly patched by BHVR back during the 2020 cheater waves.

Shown in this YT video by user V3Z, this has become easily 2/3 matches in the EU region, counting those that try to be "subtle" and cheat out of sight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=swdLaKd068M

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Current situation as of the time of this report (Spring 2024):

1) By intentional decision of the company, the game has released with crossplay on certain platforms, which
led to thousands of accounts being created by bots and distributed by hackers to players that want to keep cheating.

2) A whitelist queue has been implemented in the backend ONLY for -affiliated content creators-, to lessen the chances of running into cheaters when streaming (by not matching with smurfs/pre-banned players).

At the same time, several streamers are making content with "comp players", who are little more than the front-face of the cheater community of the game.

3) Multiple groups and sites of hackers have surfaced that distribute cheats in the open.

Cheaters using speedhacks / lagswitch-teleporting / generator speed hacks (even with no related perks or items) are everywhere. "Subtle" ones try to hide it behind objects/walls and out of line of sight, others do it blatantly.

4) Since Fall 2023, players and streamers have again been getting queue sniped and targeted.

Additionally, several cheaters stream themselves openly showcasing and distributing such software, in certain streaming sites that refuse to ban them.

5) Finally, the company openly refuses to implement a replay system for reports, requiring players instead to run recording software at all times and file reports with video evidence directly to the company's site via a convoluted process.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Conclusion: DbD is a game plagued by recurring cheater waves, with the company behind it claiming "they are racing against hackers to block cheats as soon as they can" (they are not, or are unable to keep up).

Unless BHVR either implements a robust anti-cheat, or switches into a full server-hosted game model, DO NOT INVEST IN THIS GAME. Neither licenses nor gameplay are worth dealing with cheaters in 2 out of 3 lobbies.

Yes, it is that prevalent, especially in heavily affected servers like EU, LATAM, SE Asia, and recently with increasing frequency in US East.
