If you don't know what you're getting into, I highly suggest trying the free version from the bay12 games website with a tileset you can find online with something like DFHack, and just get a feel for the type of game DF is. You are going to lose a lot. You will have to learn a lot. You can get a stable fortress, but losing is fun(I promise).

This version is missing a handful of features, but is easier to start with if you don't mind risking the $30 to try it out. Not easy to get a good feel for it within the 2 hour refund period. The in game 'tutorial' is more of a tool-tip system, which is nice, but you will either need to make many educated guesses and lose a LOT, or look up a guide.

Once you get a decently stable fort, it's mostly a game about just seeing what stupid ♥♥♥♥ happens and exploring, which will inevitably result in SOMETHING. What that something is has 25 years worth of answers, and that something will end your game in a few minutes if you haven't prepared well enough for it. Sometimes you can't.
The bright side is your fort and all of your dwarfs' history is saved and continues to affect your world and potentially future forts, which is a large reason the game can be so interesting.

DF is more of a complex simulation disguised as a game. TRY ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.

It can definitely be touchy and kind of jank at time, but that doesn't stop it from being a great party game to hang out with friends on.
