This is a great way to not do other things while you watch your favorite shows. Multiplayer is available, but is a crowd sourced add-on.

The trucks are customizeable, but the options are fairly basic in terms of trucks, and everything is level locked out. For something that is supposed to simulate the experience of owning a truck, I can't recall a shop, or dealership asking for my level before allowing me to make a purchase. When I say everything is locked out, I mean eeeeerrrrrrthing is level locked. This includes all non-performance related visuals. You can't even buy lugnut caps without a level up, heck, some mud flaps are locked out until level 16 in your career.

There is also no used truck market. This is a real deficit in the world of truck simulation, as most owner operators start off in a used truck. It would also have been a real cool option to buy a barely road worthy hulk, put it to work, and pay to restore/customize it along the way. A used truck market would also have allowed for some amazing randomly generated paint schemes, and even some extremely rare unicorn trucks that would not otherwise be available in game, with wild engine/chassis combinations unavailable through the dealers, just like in real life.

All that aside, this game lets you play how you want. You want to drive, you drive, you want to pay other people to drive, you can do that too. You want to tool around in a semi while vegeing out, you can do that. You want to pretend your racing trucks from A to B, you can do that too. The only real rules are online, where basic courtesy is required.

Buy it on sale, or somewhere cheap, or find a demo. It's either for you, or not.

The game is not pay to win, but, it can be tempting to pay to avoid the grind. If you are good, not in your head good, but other people get wrecked by you and know they are lesser players, good, then you probably won't need to spend a penny on anything besides vanity items.

Almost every tactical advantage in the game is not behind a paywall, and you may grind it out of experience if you wish. If you like playing the game, a subscription will net you about $5 worth of "daybreak cash". This in game currency, is expressed with a comma, instead of a decimal. So, 1,000 DBC, is actually 10.00 USD. The sub costs $15.00 on the monthly basis. So, you are basically paying $10.00 for the sub, and $5.00 for the included 500 DBC perk, whether you want to or not.

You can save up your DBC to choose between thousands of player made, yes, player designed vanity items, or game dev designed items, including vanity, weapons, vehicle weapons/accessories, and deploy-able items, from the in game store. Some of these items are super expensive item bundle packs, as in $85+, but, if you have a subscription, and don't use your DBC allotment every month, you could save up for this using your subscription allotments.

Also, you may subscribe annually to save $5 per month. That works out to $5 per month for the sub, and $5 per month in DBC of your actual $10.00 monthly, paid all at once, annual $120 subscription.

The other big perks of the sub, include an exp boost, and priority que for high population servers.

Again, none of this is required, and without a subscription, you could server hop to avoid a que, or choose a different map to play until your prompted to join the map you wanted. There is even a practice "VR" area, where you can test ALL the weapons/accessory/ammo combinations for free. When I'm not subbed, that is where I go to wait for my que prompt.

This game is for people that like large maps, and a vairety of ways to play. You can press one button, and be in the middle of a close quarters fire fight. You can play a helpful healer on the battlefield. You can be a tank, or aircraft operator. You can provide ammunition, and repair support. You can be a stealthy sniper. You can play 1v1 for control of a small base no-one else cares about, or the commander of a fire squad assaulting a critical asset.

The game has a place for everyone, even if you are not good at it, you will become good at something, and you will see where you made a difference in the fight.

Elite Dangerous is a mental review of your inner gamer. Who are you? Are you a pirate? Are you a blood thirsty wandering murder hobo? Are you a wolf of wall street orbital tycoon? Are you a smuggler of rare exotic goods, provider of the finest wares? Are you a nails tough salty miner? Are you a power hungry territorial leader of a guild? Are you hell bent on galaxy domination? Are you a peaceful explorer, bound to map the galaxy for all to see? Are you a frontiersman, looking to start the new bubble of civilization in space? Are you a hero to man kind, fending off the alien races that would see your people's demise? Are you the galaxy police? Are you the emergency rescue responder? Are you Elite Dangerous?

This "game" forces you to ask yourself these questions. Elite Dangerous started it's life as a space simulation, of the entire milky way galaxy. With every expansion, new, and interesting ways to play have been added. It is an ambitious game, much like it's competitor SS, with dreams of one day exploring entire worlds and civilizations, all different and procedurally generated, but once generated, part of the game forever. Expansions and content have been produced at gruelingly distant intervals, but have given the player base, reason to stick around. Future expansions at current time, will possibly include the ability to walk the entirety of your ship, leaving the ship to explore planets, leaving the ship to explore cities, space stations, alien civilizations, etc. With this ability, will inevitabley come the interactions with those environments. The future of Elite Dangerous looks far away. However, given the size and scope of the game, it is to be expected. After all, it does recreate the entire milky way galaxy. That is a huge undertaking just to create visually, let alone program as an interactable part of the game.

Once you have picked your role in the game, it becomes a highly social barrier to entry. To be any of the above, murder hobo aside, you will most likely have to become a member of the forum/discord community. This will help you understand the background simulation taking place, and the roles/affects all those actions you would like to take, have on the status of guilds/factions/wings/squadrons in the game. You may find yourself lucratively mining and selling goods to a station, only to be blockaded by players for a reason you do not understand. A simple search of the ship's ID tags, may get you in touch with the guild behind it, and their reasoning. RP does happen in ED, and when it does, it is some of the most committed RP I have ever encountered. Your trades with the station, may have negative affects on that player faction's campaign in that system. A simple pop into their discord, may not only clear things up, but offer valuable new resources in game for your cooperation. Inversely, if greed is your need, you could find their closest rival player group, of similar or greater power, and inform them of the troublesome factions intentions. Even if the group you have trouble with, is more "gud" than the group you brought into the fray, you will most likely be able to continue business while they sqaubble over turf.

In the end, Elite Dangerous is what you make of it.
