What do you get when you take painkillers, chop out some parts, put some new parts in, reskin a few things in here and there and add a dash of Pop Culture References?

You get an Overdose, Painkiller: Overdose to be exact.

Released in 2007 by Czech Company "Mindware Studios," Overdose was originally an Expansion Pack of Painkiller, where isntead of a random dude shooting demonic forces, you play as half angel, half demon, all snarky nephilim named Belial, where he's freed from his imprisonment after thousands of years. And yet somehow, despite living in a cage, he knows movie references.

I have nary an idea, so let's move on.

If you thought the original Painkiller was tough with it's hordes of enemies and some puzzle bosses, you'll be happy to know that there's not as much enemies to deal with and puzzle bosses aren't as frequent, and much easier to work with. The core principle of PK: OD is the same.

Blast they demon asses and kill the main bad dude at the end, this time being Sammael.

Belial's got some good firepower, like the Bone Shotgun from the original game, the crossbow/bomb launcher from Battle out of Hell, the Minigun/Rocket Launcher from the first game... yeah, there's a lot of returning weapons with reskins, but there are new weapons to work with like the Demon Head you get in the beginning of the gaqme that shoots lasers, Demon Eggs that work like remote sticky bombs, A dagger that can be shot out and float in place and eviscerate enemies.

Sadly, there's no weapon that shoots shurikens and lightning, for shame. :(

Along the way, Belial will face many enemies, some new like preachers that resurrect dead foes, Ladies with propellors for arms, plus some returning foes like the kids on fire from Battle out of hell, the puppets from battle out of hell...

I'm beginning to notice a theme here... things being reused from the first Painkiller and it's expansion pack. Hell, even the theme park level is ripped from Battle out of hell, just with a different final part. Laziness is a sin.

And like in the last Painkiller, if you want to get the tarot cards, prepare to deal with some BS requirements along the way, like not picking up souls, so you can't transform into a demon. Or collecting all the souls in a level, only for an enemy to be glitched out, leaving you one soul shy. :P

However, despite all the issues, I will still heartily recommend Painkiller Overdose. It may not be the prettiest girl on the dance floor and she might have some issues, but if you have patience and are willing to see what Painkiller's like without any puzzle bosses, then give Overdose a chance. It's not much on Steam and it's pretty short.

Just be careful of chicks with propellors, they're fast and they love nephilim ass. To carve.

I remember on January 2003, I got an early copy of Unreal 2 at Hastings, I'm guessing they had a review copy or something like that. Anyways, I remember playing it, liking it, but then again, I was 9 when I played it.

Now years later went by and I'm an adult now, is Unreal 2 as good as I remember it?

HELL NO.

Let's get the positives out of the way first, the graphics of Unreal 2 are good and weapons are unique just like the environments, from a gun that shoots spiders to a grenade launcher with multiple ammo types, the guns are good.

But that's about it.

Unreal 2's story has nothing in correlation with it's predecessor, Unreal 1 and RTNP. In fact, the only thing that Unreal 1 and 2 have in common is the fact there's Skarrj, and that's about it. U2 does try to add Liandri, Izanagi and Unreal Tournament references in there, but it goes over the head like the comedy.

Characters are nice, but bland.

And then there's the gameplay.

U2 is single-player only (unless you get the XMP pack of the net), and while the environments are nice looking and unique, it doesn't help that each mission is about the same; go in, kill a bunch of dudes and aliens, solve a puzzle and get the artifact.

In between missions, you can talk to your crew aboard the USS Enter... I mean Atlantis, to get briefed about your next mission, learn about your weapons and learn about the backstory of the crew, that's it. It serves it's purpose.

But sometimes when normal missions aren't enough, U2 likes to throw a curve ball in the form of defense missions.. and these can BURN. IN. HELL.

Defense missions asks you to defend an area or a person for a certain amount of time, using force fields and turrets and Marines with Derpy AI to guard the objective from waves of enemies. The problem is that not only do they break the boring flow, but some of them are a pain, be it the derpy AI marines, the derpy targeting system of the Turrets, the fact that it takes little time for the enemy to plow through your defense with ease or all three.

And let's not forget that one DICKWAD on Janus named Meyer... The biggest ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ in U2 who constantly ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ about everything. EVERYTHING.

With all these things combined, I cannot recommend Unreal 2: The Awakening to anyone, from veterans on Unreal to new players.

Did you know? Killing Floor was originally a mod for Unreal Tournament 2004. Did you also know it was made by the same team who made Red Orchestra, another UT2004 Mod?

Tripwire Interactive's track record is pretty good when it comes to mods to games and Killing Floor is extremely good.

You are part of a small 6 man team of varying perks to try and overcome the Zed Horde, from the simple Clot, the loud and proud Siren, the scary Fleshpound and the big bad Patriarch. Fighting through waves, you must survive by getting mad amounts of dosh and buying bigger and badder weapons from the Trader.

Gameplay is pretty good when solo or with a group of friends, it can get frantic at times, but it's still a fun ride along the way. And if you get tired of the base game, Killing Floor can be customized like it's parent, UT2004. Though with the Workshop function, it's a whole lot easier to install mods (I recommend subscribing to the Weapons Workshop Mod for having custom weapons to work).

Map are generally ranged from close quarters to rare big and large maps, and the visuals are pretty decent.

My major gripe is with the music, a lot of it's heavy metal stuff, but over time the music just becomes grating and uninteresting. There's stuff in the Workshop to change the music, but MP3 support would be nice.

And after a while Killing Floor does become wholely reptitve, even the objective mode gets tedious because there's not a lot of maps for it. But it's still a good dame throughout and I whole-heartedly reccommend it for those who like zombie games.

Unreal Tournament is a classic franchise, one of the founding forefathers of the first person shooting genre. UT2004 is no exception, it adds to the great formula that set the foundation and improves on it with better graphics, smoother gameplay and easy to add new mods and maps to the game, extending lifespan by years.

UT2004 also has a great multiplayer aspect, if you can still find servers.

Oh, and I do NOT recommend getting the Steam Version, as there is a fatal glitch that corrupts the configuration file in this game. The CD version is cheap and generally more reliable than the digital version. Sorry Steam, but when you give us a broken game for 15 bucks, it's gonna get panned.

Still, UT2004 is a great FPS Arena shooter game.
