What a shame that corporate greed comes along to ruin another fantastic game with not only a great community but also a dev team that actually gives a ♥♥♥♥ about their game... up until now unfortunately

it was fun while it lasted

Edit: may 6th 2024

As of today, the scheduled update, forcing the requirement of a PSN account to play helldivers 2, was cancelled. let today be a reminder to the higher-ups at sony, and less so at arrowhead games, of how close they came to losing their golden goose due to greed.

Tho a temporary victory, its a victory none the less

Do not burn what little good faith you still have on your side, sony.

My non-recommendation (if there was a third option of sorts, this might be where it comes into play) of Destiny 2 does not come from a negative perspective of the game, but rather because of the time and investment needed to play and enjoy the game.

To begin, the game is advertised as free to play; however, after many changes to the game, it is not the case entirely. Tho you can access and play the game for free, you are locked out of the majority of the current content. Things such as raids, certain locations, weapons and other possible gameplay options are locked behind a paywall in this regard. And with addition of seasonal passes that give you access to EVEN MORE content that is once again, behind a paywall of sorts, the initial investment to get the full game experience becomes somewhat daunting to a new player.

My second point is about solo content. If you are a solo player, sure you could easily find some enjoyment in the game, but only up to a certain point. after that, team play becomes almost assuredly necessary. Though finding a team or even an active clan is trivial with all the social media points of access(bungie.net, discord channels, etc), it may not be what interests a truly solo player.

All and All, if you are willing to try the free to play experience and the gameplay loop is something that appeals to you, then the investment for the full experience may be worth your while. if not, move on without remorse.

edit as of march 18th 2023, post raid release

As the game currently stands, i cannot in good faith recommend playing, or even trying Destiny 2, for new or returning players.

POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING

expansion campaign/seasonal content: The campaign has the chance to start off really strong with the setup during the last season, however falls flat with its delivery. The new characters they introduce in the campaign, one has the most predictable outcome, and the other is written as young and naive, but comes off as stupid and out-of-touch. The campaign leaves you with more questions than answers by the end of it, as very little is explained or given context, despite the supposed urgency of it all. At the very minimum, it feels like the campaign was an after-thought. The current seasonal content comes off as stronger than the expansion content. The new location, atmospherically, is very beautiful and is certainly a welcome change from ruined and run-down locations, however feels VERY empty.

Current gameplay: The armor mod system has been overhauled as to make less intimidating to new players, but for veteran players, it feels empty, even border-line soulless. Many are hoping to see the addition of new mods throughout the expansion year. Strand is fun, it shows a lot of gameplay potential and is fun to use and run around with. (big BUT in performance)

Performance: Since lightfall's release, the game has been suffering from a number of framerate issues, lag, bugs and glitches, only becoming worse with the raid's release and still today having some issues, tho SOMEWHAT mitigated through alternated methods. When these massive frame drops occur, the game becomes very hard to play, bordering on impossible, especially with the way strand movement works where you rely on game stability. Some of the concerns have been addressed by bungie and some corrected, but there still remains issues that make it an unpleasant experience.

Bungie, with the standard they set with witch queen, and the way they set-up the launch for lightfall, has dropped the ball with this one. here's to hoping the rest of the year improves on the game

Early Access Review
The game has great potential but is still very bare bones in content. I would suggest waiting a bit for future updates or waiting for it to fall on sale
