A fun little game that will satisfy your inner gun nerd. Plinking in the sandbox with the realistic bullet trajectories is a surprising amount of fun, and while the guns aren't manually operated to the same level as something like Receiver 2, they're still highly accurate and generally very satisfying to use. The only mistake I've noticed so far is the stat sheets of some pump-action shotguns claim that they're gas-operated despite them being pure pump-actions with no gas system; otherwise the attention to detail has been stellar. For $6 ($5 on sale) I'd definitely recommend it as long as you aren't expecting Receiver 3; the game is a mobile port after all.

This game is incredible. Arena mode is everything I've ever wanted from a Madness game. I have to say though, the unskippable Sanford x Deimos sex scene that occurred halfway through the main story was quite possibly the most awkward 2 minutes and 11 seconds of my entire life.

Early Access Review
Gaia Beyond is a game I've been following for several years now and I can confidently say that as of the time of writing this review, there is a ton of content for your money. The game is very polished, new content is being added regularly, and the devs are very active and extremely helpful. It's also possibly the most gorgeous looking top down space game I've ever played. Zooming all the way in lets you admire all the tiny details on the hand crafted ships, stations, asteroids and objects instead of reducing them to pixelated messes like in most other games. Additionally, the game world is very open ended and players can explore all of that beauty, as well as trade, mine, fight and much more as soon as the game starts, following story missions at their own leisure. The game is not without a few small bugs, but overall the game is an extremely polished experience and the problems present are constantly being worked on.

Tl;dr I highly recommend this game to anyone who wants to immerse themselves in a detailed, open universe full of beautiful sights, mysterious secrets, and plentiful content.

Early Access Review
Wayward Terran Frontier is a bit of a challenge to review, as it is the textbook definition of a diamond in the rough. At the time of writing I have put nearly 200 hours into the game (with many more to come) and am in the process of documenting many of the game's less-than-obvious features and mechanics in the form of a steam guide. I love this game to pieces, and in my experience there's nothing else out there that even comes close to the levels of detail it offers. That being said, I will openly admit that it has some glaring flaws.

The good:
  • Unprecedented pixel based combat where everything from ship design to weapon type to shot placement placement plays a critical role in how a battle will turn out.
  • Excellent variety in ships, weaponry and technology. You will encounter everything from bulk freighters to mining barges to high tech warships, all of which employ tons of different guns, beams, missiles, and more.
  • Excellent sense of progression: this game is the ultimate "start with nothing, end with everything" type of experience
  • Highly detailed ship editor that lets you change everything about a ship except the basic shape of its hull.
  • Stellar attention to detail in terms of world building: you will be hard pressed to find a single ship, weapon, component etc that is explained with the typical "it's sci-fi tech, it just works" (for example, just ask One how warp gates work)
  • Engaging, if currently somewhat short storyline.

The bad:
  • Learning curve is more accurately described as a learning cliff, and many features of the game are poorly (if at all) documented (again, I'm working on this with my guide.)
  • Certain areas of the game show a noticeable lack of polish: some ships spawn with just one crew member, a few missions still sometimes bug out, crew members don't always behave as they should, etc (Note: the Community Bug Fixes mod addresses a number of these issues. I cannot recommend it enough.)
  • While the developers are still active and engaged, updates come at a sometimes painfully slow pace. The game is, at least for now, very much in a 'slow burn' type of situation.

Overall, would I recommend Wayward Terran Frontier: Zero Falls? Yes. Once you look past the bugs and learn the intricacies of the combat mechanics and ship design, WTF offers some of the most edge-of-your-seat, engaging combat I've seen from a space sim. I've had so many "holy sh*t, that was awesome" moments I've lost count. Whether I'm desperately trying to repair the power lines to my beam emitters while taking enemy fire, ejecting from my exploding vessel in a last ditch attempt to board an enemy's, or just barely limping away from a warship after having half of my ship vaporized, I have yet to experience top down ship combat this thrilling in any other game on the market, and I believe that once the remaining bugs are flattened and the existing universe is built upon, this game will become a masterpiece.
