Absolutely amazing game. One of the most fun and satisfying gaming experiences I’ve had in years. It hits a perfect balance between arcade-style thrills and realistic gameplay, creating a truly unique player experience. The aircraft, weaponry, missions, and AI all feel authentic and challenging, but never to the point where it limits your enjoyment. You can try bold tactics to achieve your objectives, and actually succeed!

Utterly addictive, it brings back the nostalgia of playing games on the PS2 and PS3 as a kid. If you’re on the fence about getting it, buy it without hesitation. You will not regret it.

THIS REVIEW SHOULD BE NEUTRAL OR POSSIBLY NEGATIVE:

Here's my review and opinion on the current state and progress of Total War: Pharaoh Dynasties. I've endeavoured to be as unbiased and honest as possible, so you can make an informed decision about whether this game merits your time and money.

Many are riding a wave of euphoria because Dynasties is SO much better than Pharaoh, but let's not get ahead of ourselves.

This has certainly been a mighty comeback from the immoral money grab, cookie-cutter commercialised mess they initially released.

While they have now given us a great game to play and have significantly lowered the price (which seems like a genuine attempt at redemption), let's not forget that for many who have supported CA for years by purchasing their games and DLCs, this is what they should have produced right from the release. This is only a partial reminder to their community that they are still capable of delivering a full game when THAT'S WHAT WAS BEING SOLD.

Now, don't get me wrong, this is a great Total War game. It's certainly NOT without its shortcomings, but I'll get to that. First, credit where it's due—they have transformed this game into a very enjoyable BASE GAME. Again, it's no garden of Total War Eden, but it's a well-cut cornerstone.

We'll see if they decide to build anything of sustaining value on top of it, with significant expansions worth our money and time, along with extensive patching and craftsmanship. Or if they'll continue to churn out digital garbage now that they've clawed their way out of the pit of no return, back into the promised land.

So, rant out of the way, here's what I like and don't like and why.

CAMPAIGN GAMEPLAY:
The campaign gameplay is complex and nuanced, featuring numerous new methods of interacting with other empires. The developers have genuinely put a lot of effort into this aspect. The characters feel, well, like they have character.

However, historically, nations are not built around a single individual. They are constructed upon extensive culture, buildings, military tactics, faction-specific units and battle types, and diplomatic techniques. While the game makes a fantastic start in these areas, the characters play too central a role, overshadowing other elements. The new features, though appealing, lack depth. They are merely activities, not culturally shifting and politically dynamic decisions with real consequences.

The campaign should offer a richer tapestry of historical and cultural contexts. Empires should reflect the complexity of their societies, with decisions that truly matter and resonate through the ages. As it stands, the characters are engaging, but they should be part of a broader, more intricate web of historical authenticity and strategic depth.

COMBAT:
Combat is actually quite impressive. My FPS takes a hit in a sandstorm, but that's beside the point. The new combat mechanics are smooth and allow for tactical play. I've had numerous battles where the outcome was uncertain, and the AI is quite sophisticated, employing flanking maneuvers and utilizing high ground. The lethality mechanic is a brilliant addition, adding a layer of realism. However, it's slightly overpowered in its current state; you can decimate an army with archers alone, which is far from ideal. But I'm sure that will get tweaked.

Another issue is unit balance. You can outplay an opponent all you want, but sometimes the enemy army inexplicably overpowers your units, even though they don't have significantly better forces. Formations break and flanks occur in an inconsistent manner at times, disrupting the flow of battle.

FINAL POINT:
This is my main problem with the game as a historical title, and I've been pondering how to articulate this all day.
It feels like a mobile game. Rome II and Attila play like hardcore strategic world-at-war Total War games, with real countries pitted against real countries, high tensions, and a sense of GRAVITAS. But this game feels like an arcade experience. From the UI to the campaign layout and mechanics, it seems filled with time-filler activities lacking substance. Downgrade the graphics and put it on an iPhone, and it would fit right in. Cities don't look historic or mighty from the campaign map; they're just a single building. Regions and settlements are randomly named and lack significance—they might as well be called Town A and Town B. Regions are named after the characters, adding to the lack of historical immersion.

Despite all this, you might be wondering why I am giving a positive review. Because, despite its flaws, it is a good game FOR ITS PRICE. At $20, it offers numerous positive features, HUGE potential for future development, and I will certainly be playing it more. The game has laid a solid foundation, and with the right expansions and tweaks, it could become a truly remarkable title.
