My Top 10

10. Mega Man Battle Network 6 - Pretty much my first game. Completed several times, clocked thousands of hours. Absolute GBA classic. The evolutionary dead end of the brilliant Battle Network design. A perfect mixture of fast paced, skill-based action, with the strategy of a turn based RPG, that borrows heavily from table top card games. Absolute must play.

9.Jak and Daxter The Precursor Legacy - It was the first game I ever completed and has inspired an ethos of exploration in the way I play games to this day. Technical marvel of fun and creativity. Total nostalgia fuel.

8.Super Metroid - Put the 'metroid' in metroidvania with is superb design and immersive world. Doesn't hold your hand, yet rewards replaying. Foundational atmosphere and world-building for what would become the future of horror games as well as space sci-fi.

7. System Shock 2 - Did what so many other immersive sims tried to and failed by combining deep rpg fundamentals with a cold hard shooter, both from it's own era and still now, 30 years later. This game is abusive towards its players in the best sense. It had guts and heart and is just oozing with ambition. Actually scary and ridiculously unforgiving, with an insane and dizzying depth of mechanics. It is an example of what makes PC gaming so good and has gone on to inspire countless other more accessible series'. Pure cyberpunk bliss.

6.Borderlands - Just silly, dumb, stupid, shoot-em-up, stylized violence, fun. It's a world to immerse yourself in and yet not feel greatly attached to. It is immensely silly and flawed in so many technical aspects, but as a cultural touchstone for so many from it's time, and the procedural generation of it's loot system was far ahead of its time.

5.Half-Life 2 - As far as a first person shooter goes, in the modern era, this is the granddaddy of all of them. (at least the good ones) With enough influence from the 90s era of immersive sim, DOOM, and Quake to capture the immense fun of what shooters once were without sacrificing the slew of weapons or inventive design and usage of cover and strafing to fit modernism in. It is dark and mature, yes, but not quite in the realm of 6th-7th gen console brown and grey slop. It has a uniqueness and a character in its environments that can make it compelling as a scifi, as well as deeper horror elements, and all kinds of fun technical sandbox moments that serve to showcase the engine and creativity of its developers.

4. Nier;Automata - Utterly blown away with this game. Profound as it is elegant and silly at times. The storytelling and gameplay are woven together in spectacular harmony as it wears its artistic and philosophical influences on its sleeve.

3. Silent Hill 2 - Easily the most impressive story to be told through the media of games, even 20 years later. Unparalleled in its atmosphere and themes, symbolically woven together in a way that is decidedly linear, but forever branching around it's main ideas. The peak of horror in gaming for its psychological edge. In an objective sense, probably the 'best' game I've ever had the experience of playing. The remake serves to both deepen the connection of long time fans to the original and introduce a new generation to this masterpiece, but does not serve to match or replace the original in any way.

2. Rockman 2/Rockman X4/Rockman Zero 3 - Basically, the best of any in the 3 main cannon series' could stand with the best of them. Classic for its foundational gameplay and nostalgia. X for it's progression, design, and memorable set pieces. Zero 3 for it's immensely deep combat system and culmination of lore. Each of these games claim some of the greatest music to ever appear in a video game ever, period. They are as much a historical landmark as they are a cultural touchstone for gaming as a medium.

1.Undertale - This forever changed the way I thought about games. Explaining why Undertale is amazing would require spoiling it. I enjoyed every moment of completing this masterpiece. Toby Fox has made a lasting impression on the industry and games to come, and is just as much a part of who I am as a person now.
