This game does have promise but the recent hype does not paint a true picture of the current state of the game. I do appreciate the complexity and realism and humour. However it is so clumsy in so many ways. The controls are so finicky and you really need to persevere to understand what precisely you need to do to get the mechanics of it to work.
I think it is likely to be worthwhile when it comes out of early access but they are already flogging DLC for it before they have got many of the fundamental things right. I look forward to changing this review to a thumbs up when things improve in the future but for now, it is rather frustrating and disappointing.

This game has so much potential it's sad to say that there is no way I could really recommend buying it. There is no way to intuitively know what is going on and how your choices will affect outcomes. That is not the worst thing as I could enjoy the role-playing aspect of it. But the UI is unforgivable Don't buy any social media hype from reviewers who got the game for free; it's not worth it.

Early Access Review
It is easy to forget that it is an early access game because it runs so well and is carefully thought through to offer something unique from what has come before. It also allows you to alter the level of change to suit your play style and there are many paths to follow that increases replayability. You would be mad not to buy it now. That being said, it is clear there is so much more coming and you will feel desperate for those improved and enhanced features eventually. Let's hope the new content and improvements to balance do come - based on the quality of this, I'm sure they will.

Yes, they have future-proofed the game and so trying it at full spec on a good pc is not going to go well. But it works fine if you don['t get too greedy about the graphics.
It's pretty much what you expected the game to be: a slightly better foundation that the first game.
What does work much better is the management aspect of the game. It is far better balanced and scaled.
I'm sure that updates, DLCs, modders and the community will build this one into something just as special as the first one.

Simply a masterclass in how to develop and support a game.

Fantastic community.

More a building box of Lego than a tycoon game but it does that better than any other game out there.

Don't listen to the naysayers. This game is marvellously put together. It has the same attention to detail as other Paradox games but is very much it's own thing - I especially like the very different way they handle warfare compared to the other games (controversial I know but give it a chance). Of course, there is obviously plenty of scope for them to tweak and add over the next years. And we know that Paradox will do this based on their track record. Are there things that need rethinking? Sure. The tech tree is a bit lame and some of the micromanagement could have better shortcuts. The graphics and artwork is stunning until some of the stuff on the UI becomes a but scroll heavy. The game also starts to struggle to cope in the end game stages and needs to be optimised a bit more.
The game is not for the faint-hearted - it's difficult to learn. But this is part of the reward and replayability of all their grand strategy games. Overall a winner that will grow and grow and...

So far...so disappointing. Like a mobile phone game. Really frustrating and not intuitive.

Genuinely delivered as promised. Doesn't mess too much with the original formula but it feels like something exciting and new. The campaign is great (full of as much cheese as a thick crust pizza of course but slick) and offers loads of replayability. The prologue really will hello new players without partronising them and diehard TW fans get mortal empires free from the off. Future DLCS and perfomance improvements will be bounds to keeping it up to date for a long time to come and I'm sure many of the complainers will be totting up hundreds of hours of gameplay by the end of next month.

As a real Paradox nerd, I was always going to buy it.

It is disappointing and badly balanced. Another in a line of successive failures from a studio I have always supported.

This is actually rather good and plays really well just as it is. The roadmap shows that they are going to add plenty more flavour, and what they are suggesting is precisely what will give the game real challenge and longevity - if they deliver as well as what they've already got, it can only get better. It's worth twenty quid now. I really like the art style.
