I have put many hours into Skullgirls, not just on steam but also at other friends houses and on consoles. I have to say it is honestly my favorite fighting game and I absolutely love fighting games, so that's obviously pretty high praise coming from me.

Game Mechanics: Skullgirls has one of the most interesting fighting game systems i've ever seen. The 5 layered system of how combos are performed before a burst can be activated is insanely smart as it limits the potentional for cheap exploitable gimmicks like infinites. Trust me, I love a good infinite as much as the next guy but it can really slow down the pace of a game like Marvel 3 where damage scaling is a thing. Overall, the way teams are set up isn't that new of a concept if you've played games like Marvel VS Capcom or Capcom VS SNK but what is new that I haven't noticed in any other fighting game, is the ability to set your teams assist to anything. If you want your teammate to come out and taunt(because taunts aren't just for showboating in this game) you can totally do that. That alone can keep the game really fresh because you won't always see people rocking the same assist on a character that you see everywhere else. Overall mechanicaly, I think this game is absolutely stellar!

Sound: Skullgirls features a great voice cast with many unique lines and even alternate voice packs for certain characters, my favorite being Big Band's Sax-ploitation not only because of the lines but also the pun in the name. It also features one of my favorite soundtracks of a fighting game. Not all the tracks are amazing but it certainly has some standouts like "Unfinished Business" "NMO Arena" and the absolutely fantastic credits song "In Just a Moment's Time".

Art: Skullgirls has some of the best 2D character art i've seen in a long time. Of course it will never beat sprite art like SF3: 3rd Strike or FF6 but those are all-timers. It also has about 25 colors for every character, some that may even be a bit familiar depending on what games you've played in the past, however you have to buy the color pack to unlock most colors but I personally think it's worth it. The games menus are all presented in an old school, film-fed projector style giving it the feeling of a movie. Main menus: film reel. Character select: film reel. Match start: film reel. Everytime a super is used: film reel. This attention to detail and consistency really shows how much love was put into the presentation of this game. Not to mention the full fledged art gallery of concept art and professional art by comissioned artists for each character and stage that continues to unlock as you play the game.

Overall: I think if you are any kind of fighting game fan at all you should definitely pick this, even if you're not I think it's worth a go! If you're stingy you can get this game for a little under $4(with all DLC it's about $8) on a pretty regular basis. However if you really feel like supporting the developers you can get it for $15 plus if you wanna buy the DLC. I've bought 3 copies of this game including a physical copy shipping to me in January, because I love it so much and if you end up buying it I hope you love it too!
