I had fun with this game from start to the finish and enjoyed my time with it a lot. It's not perfect, I can tell you that, but it's still very good. I think it's up there for my favorite game of the series, just because I personally had so much fun playing it.

No spoilers for the game, just general thoughts.

I see Dragon Age games as standalone experiences and judge them accordingly. They were never meant to be a trilogy or a franchise, and that shows with all of the retcons and backtracking they do with every installment. They mold the world to fit for the story they want to tell and that is how it has been for years now. I know it's hard not to compare this game to the previous games in the franchise. And I do understand the frustration and some of the critique this game gets, even if I don't agree with a lot of it. This is not the best Dragon Age game, but far from the worst. Even if it came with the cost of previous choices, Veilguard manages to tell compelling story with high stakes and just the right amount of dark fantasy. It clearly has a lot of heart to it, even if I know the development of this game was a huge mess. You can still see it in some parts of the game, and I'm saddened that this didn't have more time to be fully realized. With this kind of game you really can't please everyone. If the Keep was fully integrated for this game, it would have been a huge mess and not a great introduction to the world. Inquisition was that for me, and I'm glad they went with a different approach with this game.

I played on Nightmare mode the first time through and enjoyed the combat a lot. It was a huge step forward from the boring combat from Inquisition. Yes, it's nothing like the previous games, but it's a lot more brave and coherent in its vision. I did wish that the endgame felt more powerful and the builds were a bit more versatile. But overall the combat was fun and interactive.

I felt connected to the companions and they are a highlight of this game. Emmrich especially, I love that old man. The romances and the companion quest were super fun and creative. As a big fan of Mass Effect 2, I'm glad they brought "loyalty missions" to this game series. I'm also happy that I can just spend time with the companions and chill. The whole group felt like a friend group and they had great chemistry with each other. I'm gonna miss these characters.
