Fun

Though I had fun on the first play through game, the art style and music of the game are outstanding, but the game play is extremely repetitive, looking at old trailers for it you can see some cool concepts that were cut from the game. Honestly if the game would have kept being developed for a bit longer it could have been a masterpiece, sadly it lacks any replay value when it comes to the gameplay loop. Rpgs these days come standard with a bit of randomness in generation, choice in paths, and in what order to do certain parts of the story. Sadly the closest thing to any sort of randomness is auto generated sentences by some of the npcs. The only true way to get a different experience would be to not add acquire certain party members, or trying different equipment but with the basic rpg combat that the game has its more fun to just use what you know works instead of experimenting.

If you're looking for a one time enjoyable experience for 20 bucks then I'd recommend it but it honestly sucks to see such an amazing style and concept wasted on this game, that and the fact that we will probably not see anything else from mason for another 5 years is where most of my frustration comes from. Another problem I have is with the platforming section, on the first play through it was fine but instead of making an actual fun portion of the game it seems mason cheap'd out and basically just skip both of these platforming sections. Instead of perfecting it and making it into something that you want to go back and play over and over again instead of just a cheap out transition to a different section of the game.

Though I've given the game a hard time I've still played the game through 3-4 times because I love the art style and the music that much, because it gives off such a unique vibe that you don't see to often just really wish the game was fun to play so it would be a better experience.



Additional thoughts Mason is against fan created works and any community created content other then artwork of the game, only reason I see this is he's scared someone would make a better product with the idea and I don't believe he has a copyright on the franchise. Gate keeping artistic expression especially with a concepts as abstract as hylics is strange and I feel is a detriment to the growth of the games community leaving less experiences and ideas to be shared.
