An incredible title, marred by typical publisher interference and penny pinching schemes. While it's easy to blame Square-Enix for all of this, you really can't. It's true that they control the purse strings, but any artist with even the slightest bit of integrity and pride in their work would dig their heels into the floor over the laughable features that were added, and if refusal to co-operate then results in the game simply not being made, then so be it.

Since they obviously didn't fight them, some of the blame will rightfully have to go their way, and that's the end of that. There's really nothing more to discuss.

If you ignore the phone game quality Breach mini-game, the DLC items that are phone game-tier one use consumables (as in one use across ALL SAVES YOU EVER MAKE, EVER), and some rushing here and there, you'll find an exceptional title. I mean, this is the sequel to human revolution, which is one of the best games ever made, so anything less than that would be a failure.

Despite being the sequel to the third game in the series, DX: MD draws heavily upon the first game, which was a welcome surprise for yours truly, but made the average teen gamer confused, lost, and feel out of his depth Naturally, despite the many coolbacks and homages, it's Adam Jensen II: first blood part II. Yeah, more on that 'confused teens' comment... While people have been begging for what they perceive as a return to form, it turns out a large portion of the playerbase actually can't handle exploration, somewhat limited ammo, less resources in general, somewhat rougher choices and consequences, and more of a cerebral experience, balanced weapons so all guns have a purpose. Now the latest news on the street is that HR was better because reasons. If these people would actually do more than follow quest markers and impotently attack riot armor cops with shotguns, flashbangs, and tear gas, when said player only has an issue, I don't know what to say to these lost souls.

Prospective buyers shoul disable all the casual feautres, which includes quest markers, and simply pay attention. At no point does a quest giver tell you to go to X, instead they give you the street name, number, and full address - unheard of since HR's time, Without slavishly lemming training the quest marker, you'll find yourself explore an incredibly meaty game, (expected, considering the series' pedigree), but a lot of love and care has done into art. This is one a handful of titles through history that have gone with hard brutalism and succeded. No joke. A 69 dollar dell monitor, that shows black as purple would naturally kill this experience, so please get your colors adjusted and corrected iv possible.

The biggest change, by far, is combat. Combat has always been the weakest of the DX pillars (stealth, social, exploration, combat), but with MD, it's been upgraded. If you're a fan of the crysis series, you'll instantly feel at home with everything, right down to the quickchange weapon mod system. Also rather than the traditional 400 billion trash guns, there's only about a dozen really useful and thought out guns, with some quirky 'uniques' on top, like a full auto shotgun that only shoots armor piercing slugs, or the mega high DPS combat rifle variant that only fires EMP ammunition. You also get a wide assortment of augs that double as weapons, and Adam somehow incorporated nanosuit 2.1 technology, now sporting the new MAXIMUM ARMO- I mean titanshield aug, which does exactly what it says on the tin.

As for the other pillars, no other deus ex game has had this much of a focus on exploration. You're gonna miss a lot of little things, and even some big things, on your first two or three playthroughs.

The only gripe is really the system requirements. Much like how combat is very inspired by crysis, so too are the system requirements. You need a beast machine, or at least beast computer knowledge, if you want to play with eye candy and technology turned to 11. People who got suckered into the GTX 970 3.5 gig meme card are at a distinct and crippling disadvantage, as their 3.5 gigs of VRAM just isn't quite 4 gigs, which is the requirement for a lot of cool stuff, so prepare to lower some settings if you're on one.

While many are citing poor optimization, there's only so many ways to 'optimize' 4 gigs of textures to make them fit into 3.5 gigs of space.

Overall, and aside the awful launch debacle and publisher/developer meddling, this is an amazing game that you really should play, but may not have the hardware to enjoy fully.

Edited Jan. 3rd, 2017: after months of patching and fixes, the game's playable even by intermediate users, and just went off a surprise 67% discount sale - and unheard of number for such a high-profile franchise, but a developer and publisher that aren't exactly famed for their generosity.

I predicted they got the hint, and since DX is one of SE's most valuable IPs, heads will roll, criminal past will deliver, and Nixxes hopefully keeps patching.

At the of typing this, it's been over four months, and still not a peep from anyone about the launch, the consumable DLC, or anything.

Regardless, base game and system rift DLC are good things. Give them a whirl, regardless of whetever or not your provider is Gaben a faction that flies the skull and crossbones in this year and era.

DX: MD was easily the most demanding, functional, PC title made in 2016. Let's see what 2017 brings.

Very recommended.

I have carefully read your review and the discussion below it with utmost enjoyment and my only option now is to congratulate you on such a good essay on Mankind Divided. Indeed everything you say about the exploration side of this game is on point... and there's no denying the atmosphere in this game is top notch, standing on top with the likes of Metal Gear Solid (the first one) and Talo's Principle. It fills me with joy to know there's people out there that fully appreciate this game that was CRIMINALLY dismissed by the gamer-peddling reviewers out there on the tubes (Angry Joe, Jim Sterling, et al).

There is only ONE disagreement I have, and that is Human Revolution is the better game... more subtle, more artistic and more focused. MD is more refined I concede.

Thank you for the review...

I am not sure whether you have tried to review the game or your ability to play it, how it should be played and how others are just confused average teens gamers. But, man, your ego is so entertaining!

And I'm fine with that, but there you have my reasons for why I devoted so much time to this one game in particular, in a series I've had a burning passion for since its inception so many years ago. Have a grand last few days of 2019, and a happy 2020.

i disagree

It's shallow and short if you don't explore, as I already covered. DX OG's story is orders of magnitude smaller, worse, and less important than the one in MD. Go play the game and talk to people. Look at the environments. Check the graffiti and shadows on the clockstore on the third day after it burns down. Look at the environments in the dvali headquarters backstage rooms. Look at the artpieces around the world. Get up to the chrome apartment on the third day and watch the shadows. Watch the world in general.

It's a 'show' not a 'tell' game. It's why people don't get it, and why I love it.

As for atmosphere, the climb up The Throat is more atmospheric than anything in DX OG, and that's not even a high point of MD. It's a feast to the senses, but not everybody has senses in this day and age.

thanks for your answer. i think the original game is far superior. MD's story is shallow and short in comparison, and the atmosphere of the original game is far superior in my opinion.

To this day, people still confront and question me and my expertise on this game, not realizing that I know the game better than most people know the backs of their hands. They also seemingly don't realize how much I've contributed to places like the wiki, the steam forum, and virtually every other DX resource, or that I've been contributing to fan resources for DX since the very first game almost 20 years ago.

As far as DX games go, MD is by far the best one. It's a masterpiece, and delivers what everybody was crying for, but the fanbase is too stupid to see it, or understand, explore, question, or do anything but follow quest markers, which are disabled by default on 3 out of 4 difficulties. A DX5 will be a way watered-down experience compared to MD.

People who say this game is the worst in the franchise are as deluded and barbaric as the people who claim it was 'half a game,' or kept citing Jim Sterling's totally for realz actual information from a developer, guys-video as evidence for X, Y, and Z. Factually, the game is way too complicated, detailed, difficult, and hardcore for the majority of the world's population.
Look at the steam global achievement chart, and despair. The average player doesn't even experience a sixth of the game's actual content. They walk through the game, decide it's empty, but it's 'empty' because they don't talk to anyone, don't explore, don't follow up on characters day 2 and 3, don't try different solutions, and most don't even bother trying out the new augs, or realize their choices have consequences.

The long answer is too long for a steam review window, but the game has an almost endless amount of the kind of content that I actually appreciate. Unfortunately, I seem to be in a very small minority of people who can even recognize it for what it is. A couple hundred hours of playtime are also not actual playtime, but was used to take screenshots, test things, tech support for people, and so on.

how can you have this many hours in this game, that blows my mind. this game is seen as one of the worst in the franchise. what makes you keep playing a single player game like this for nearly half a year of your life? i'm not attacking you, i'm genuinely curious, because that is pretty insane to me, that you can find this much value in a game like this
