I am happy with the game, I just hate that they removed difficulty estimation for the factions as you create a new campaign. I usually pick only hard and very hard as other don't pose any challenge and these estimated used to be good.

I enjoyed the game a lot. You can try number of strategies. But over time, the gameplay becomes too repetitive, AI is quite dumb and there is limited variety to battle maps.

And yes, most games become repetitive at some point, but here it happens before you explore all the campaign regions, so too quickly.

I am torn on this one. AI opponent acts weird in custom maps, sometimes, it breaks down during official maps too. There is also that weird dynamic with battering ram which is ridiculously difficult to destroy and works without anyone stationed inside. If you put someone into the ram, they won't take damage or shoot (is this really how rams worked historically?)

This being said, I get enough fun from the official maps and abusable mechanics are available to both players anyway. It is a change from Supreme Commander but far from "great".

Good game. But takes some Youtube-watching to understand.

• I didn't know you can hold dodge to move faster until 25h+ into the game.
• I also wondered, why I rarely break the stance of the enemies. Turns out it must be weight of the weapon that determines that. Found out after 30+ hours of playing.

Great game nevertheless.

You play -> plan the strategy -> lose -> learn from your mistakes -> play again. Like any strategy game, it's about looking to make the best choices and getting better every time.

The Last Spell gives you the tools in every following run. New defense structures, new buildings, new hero qualities... I am not a big fan of the newly generated heroes getting bonuses to all their primary stats, because it makes the beginning of every new game pretty boring.

Anyway, you may read on forums stuff like the ranger class is OP and that you can just put rangers on the towers and click the enemies down in a very silly fashion. It's probably the first strategy you will think of, but the game isn't this silly. If you learn to use different weapons synergically, you will find other far more efficient ways to win.

The game includes all that a proper turn-based strategy needs. A plethora of choices on how to build your economy, your heroes, your defenses, and good progression. Obviously, when there are good choices, there are also bad choices. Single-player games aren't necessarily about finding balance, instead, you can have fun when searching for the most efficient moves. I like it that way.

Lastly, its still very early release which makes the gameplay a little repetitive. I am sure this will be looked at.

PRO TIP: Playing as Empire, you can storm capitals in 30 turns. Get two lvl 3 AoE healers and put armor on your leader. Then, use spells and potions to max up armor.

Similarly, you can do so with Undead (ghost) or Legions (petrify), but you need to buff their accuracy and have the capacity to sustain at least two hits.

Compared to Rome III, Warhammer, Warhammer II and Elysium, I like:

►Spies and agents work very realistically. They can't kill half the enemy army or immobilise it indefinitely. Spies have to get respect within the faction and pile on rank before they are of any benefit. Even if they become reputable individuals within the faction, they still can defect and their abilities are limited. Eventually, they can lead enemy forces into the ambush or recall the whole army, but it is very hard to pull off.
►Many diplomatic and worldview options. You can reveal where the food is produced for example. Or you can produce food and make a faction dependent on your supply.
►Items can be produced in the blacksmith. It will take a lot of time, but it makes more sense than when they just randomly pop up as in Warhammers.
►The wooden towers are easy to set ablaze. If there are other wooden constructions nearby, they will burn as well. AI rarely uses it in the fortification battles.
►You can choose either more RPG like experience (Warhammer-like) or traditional (Rome II-like). Either way, you get three generals per battle if your army is full and they will command different parts of your army.
►The generals are deeply specialized. All get access to basic units, only some get access to melee bruisers, only some get access to heavy cavalry, only some get access to advanced spear infantry, only some can attain siege engines. I think it makes it more fun.
►Recruitment process takes time, you can't recruit a whole regiment in an instant. Well, you can recruit all 18 units in an instant to fight right away, but they will only be at about 15% of their total number. New units need to be replenished first.
►The generals don't die as easily as in other games. They can be put down, but they are more likely to get away. You can also capture them and recruit them into your own faction and they can run away from you too.
►Duel option gives creates another strategic resolution to the battle.

I don't like:

►The crossbows can fire over obstacles. How and why? I mean they still pierce armor, that is just wrong. Theoretically, you can fire a crossbow like that, but how can such hit still be as penetrating as a direct hit?
►AI is better than in mentioned titles, but it could be perfected a lot more. Especially in ambush battles, it is just too easy to defeat. That is on the hardest difficulty and I can still turn crushing/decisive defeats into close wins pretty consistently. Either the battle calculator or AI capabilities could improve.

All in all I enjoyed the game without any DLCs and it feels as a complete game unlike other titles.

This game doesn't meet 2020 requirements for a game at all. It is something that would be competitive 15-20 years ago. It reminds me of those first games such as pinball. I understand it is probably early alpha or beta, but I don't see a potential for improvement either. Its design is just bad and insufficient.

Ok, this is not how games are supposed to feel in 2020. I don't even think that the potential is quite there. You just can't turn Blood Bowl in real time strategy, that won't work.

The game is recomendable, but it is not something you will be coming back to for a long time. There are mechanic you need to figure out. It is about strategy, but at the certain point, you will learn the strategy, and this certain point comes pretty soon. After that, it is RNG.
