I am not someone who loves driving; it's simply a function of life. Drive to work, drive to the store, etc. It's a necessary evil. How odd, then, that pretty much ever since I got ATS I've been playing it (and ETS2) to the near-exclusion of every other game in my library. It's safe to say I'm addicted.

The great thing about sims that are done well is that you can "live" a life you might not otherwise. I'd never be a trucker in real life, but there's something about doing it virtually that is highly engaging.

I do tend to have a bad case of "restart-itis," so although I've got 225 hours into this game I'm not even close to the "end game" (which is basically buy all the garages, hire all the drivers, max everything out, go everywhere, etc.).

I like that you have mutliple ways to approach things. Get a loan early, go into debt to jump-start your company? Sure. Never take out a loan and take the long, slow burn approach? Why not? Hire only female drivers? Check (this is what I'm doing, although at some point I'm sure they'll run out and I'll have to start hiring dudes). Heck, you could even not buy a truck and just play the game without actually forming a company (although the drawback to that is never having any job options other than quick jobs).

There are a few "drawbacks." I don't like the "unrealistic tickets" that you can sometimes get from the police (come on, a cop driving the opposite direction on a divided highway is not going to be shooting his radar into oncoming traffic), and sometimes the AI is just plain dumb. Also, despite having flashing lights, railroad crossings give you no actual warning time whatsoever - as soon as the lights go on, an invisible barrier immediately blocks you, so bad luck for you if you happen to be halfway across the tracks when the lights go on. Also, the arms will come slamming down and cause damage and/or get you stuck.

There are a lot of internet radio stations that you can access in-game, but honestly that's a bit of a hassle, at least in my experience. Many stations are just variations on each other (and, at least in ETS2, most of them, being global in nature, end up not connecting anyway). It's easier and quicker to just play your own music on a stereo or directly from an external website.

Ok, I've written enough; gotta get back in the cab.

I love this game. It's still kind of topical, but I don't play it for the politics. The graphics are nice, the missions are fun, and there's a lot of replayability because if something doesn't work, back up a little and try a different approach. Sometimes the AI is a bit wonky, especially when in vehicles, but overall the controls are smooth and intuitive. I like that you have to pay attention to how much money you have and that you can't rely on just endlessly churning out or requisitioining equipment, supplies, and soldiers.. It makes you play smart with what you have.
