A short and cute little visual novel game.

The game has 4 main characters that you can choose to follow where each character's story is dependent on the other character choices. What makes this game interesting is that the presentation is cute and the character's are cute. You want to see all the options that are available...

But there is only pain and suffering

Game plays well, controls are easy, text is super easy to read, getting all endings is easy.
Price maybe a tad high for a 2 visual novel if not on sale

I recommend playing it in one session

Solid gun play and gameplay,

PVE is a roguelite experience with modifiers and upgrades. Right now it is pretty barebones but still pretty fun. The content is lacking and there aren't that many interesting modifiers. It features up to 4 encounters per run with an okay variety that will hopefully be expanded on (As of writing there are 2 bosses). There is only 1 map with a bunch of secrets and loot drops. Enemy variety is not that big yet, there are two factions of enemies and both factions only have around a handful of different enemies. The weapon system is purely side grades which in PVP makes sense but in PVE it should be upgrades.
The PVE game is still fun though and hopefully can be expanded on with much more variety, if not then it's still equal to games like Second Extinction

PVP is very mixed there are just too many guns that one shot you, it feels like Rogue Company first person and sometimes Dirty Bomb as well. The Blueprint system is not cool since some of the modifiers are very strong and it is a weird mix between skins and possibly game changing play styles. Please change this.

TL:DR It's okay, needs work

On a surface level, Children of Morta checks all the boxes in a promising great game.

  • Roguelike
  • RPG
  • Multiple Playable Characters
  • Beautiful pixel graphics
  • Online COOP
  • And many more things

This list sounds great. Until you actually play it. The game is Roguelike but it doesn't feel like one until the very end, there is nothing to "build" you take every single passive you can get. The actives are limited to a single one in the start and gets expanded to two later, however, these feel like some ultimate ability with their super long cool downs. There is also a slot for the actives AND passives, these can be anything from a 1 time use ability or a super strong passive. It just doesn't make sense why these aren't clearly separated, if you wanted to keep some of the stronger 1 time use abilities like triple gem then just drop them or put some heavy drawback on them (eg. Raging Bull).

Regarding the story, it is pretty standard. Follows a family whose mom and dad have been very busy. A clear cut good versus bad. The game tries to introduce some more background to the villains but it falls short. Side story content are optional and cute. Not all characters are presented with the same effort, doesn't make sense why someone can just spit out fireballs ?? But cool I guess.

I played on hard - so some experiences may vary
Game play and enemy variety - This is BY FAR the weakest point in the game. Let's start with game play, some characters are way too good for AOE and others are way too good for single target. I like to believe this is because they want us players to mix it up and play all the characters. However, since it is Roguelike it is all about killing them before they kill you, and fortunately there are a couple of characters that can spit out massive damage while still being VERY safe to play. These are both the kiddos - the assassin and the fire mage. All the other characters are just not that good and this is because of enemy variety.

Enemy variety in this game is not shallow but boring. You have those that walk in a straight line towards you and sometimes they might charge you (wow). You might have some ranged mobs once in awhile or some bigger mobs but most of the time they just walk towards you in straight line. What is the problem with this? Well none if it didn't feel like you had to kite for 50 years before progressing to the next room and repeat the same thing again. Some rooms are absolutely stacked with enemies and if you play some of the bad characters then it will take a considerable amount of time to safely clear them. This is especially so in early game, early game which is waaaaay too slow. I wanted to quit after the first world because the second world was just more of the same kiting forever but mummies instead of skeletons and more scorpions. Having to kite enemies doesn't feel good either, waiting for cool downs for 12 seconds or 30 seconds for divine abilities doesn't feel great either but this is BY FAR the safest way to preserve HP. In most roguelikes you have action packed rooms where killing them fast is key to preserve HP. Attack cues in this game is also janky, there is one good enemy that combines a visual cue and an audio cue for attack. There are simply not enough audio cues, sometimes it is a complete mystery who attacked me and how I got hit. Boss designs are 100% the worst culprit in this, while most bosses are easy to kill, it doesn't excuse the lack of a needed audio cue for some of the bigger attacks. Furthermore, if audio cue existed you could lower some of the longer animations.
A special mention and complaint about a boss is the story boss in mid game. which forces you to kill it before proceeding or changing characters. This would be fine if the specific boss wasn't a melee bully. You simply couldn't evade the large swipe attacks no matter how fast you mashed the space button.
Also many boss designs are completely forgettable, I was actually very disappointed in many of the designs. I only 1 boss was slightly hard, the rest were simply pushovers because they were laughably easy.

Upgrade and skill point wise, pretty standard upgrades with percentage increase. Some upgrades like Gold and Exp are definitely needed to speed up the grind to see some more interesting things. A shame that we actually have to speed up the grind to see some of the later cool talents though. I understand the game doesn't want to show all its cool things at the start but it simply waits too long to show them imo. Synergy abilities and family member global talents are super cool, yet many players won't experience unlocking them all (not maxing, just unlocking them). And these talents are core to the world building and key message of the game, a shame because they would actually be way more useful in the start too.

The graphics, dayum these pixel graphics are well made. This game is clearly made with love and the tiny details are super cool.

Online COOP is very cool to see and it sometimes feel like the game design/ game play was only designed for this.

TLDR: This game is clearly a passion project with many upsides. There are also some grave downsides that simply cannot be overlooked. I still recommend this because of its cool artstyle and the fact that it has a lot of cool elements, most of them are just locked behind a grind wall.

With little experience of metroidvania games I can say that this was an enjoyable experience. However, it is not without faults and weird game design choices.

Things I found really cool:
  • Every enemy drop an ability you can use, so you evolve while playing
  • Aesthetically pleasing setting and backgrounds
  • Fully voice acted
  • Good weapon variety with special skills
  • Character customization, this would have been cooler if there was a mark on the minimap so you know where to go
  • Multiple playable characters after first game completion, very cool to play some of the other key characters in the game
  • Secrets - it is a secret what the secrets are

Things that were not as good:
  • Difficulty curve, I died more on the first boss than any other boss. Was also one of the few bosses that required me to use a healing items. You simply end up out scaling things
  • Game design, there are some things to be desired here. The game make sense when it forces you to beat a boss to progress to the next place. But then it wants you to not beat a boss and do something else, even though there is nothing to do. It does try to help you with conversations in town but it can be hard to understand what is required sometimes. The game wants you to explore everything as some items and abilities from monsters (that have a small drop rate) are required to progress. Without looking up the answer it can take several back and forth's to make progress as you need to backtrack in order to move forward.
  • Enemy variety. I understand the game already have a ton of variety and it does. There is a ton of unique enemies. But the last few areas are a bit disappointing as all enemies are re-skins of earlier ones. With the same pattern and attacks so you already know how to effectively deal with them
  • A couple bosses are cheeseable given the tools you were awarded with in game. Making them so so much easier. I am not sure if this is intentional

As for the average things:
  • Story it is pretty average. There is a lot of back story which is gathered from bookshelves around the place. The story was very obvious.
  • The upgrading for materials and shards was a cool idea but sometimes require a bit too many materials as enemies only have a % chance to drop what you need
  • Gold is acquired through shards and lights pretty standard, one thing I can say though is the discount card is very very expensive and it only gives 10% off. Absolutely do not buy. The game could've been more generous with the discount card as you absolutely have to go out of your way to grind it.
  • Optional bosses - I love the idea of them, it just feels terrible when you have to run back to some of them because they can be pretty far away from the spawn.

Overall, pretty enjoyable even though I did end up finding it a bit too easy. New Game + and forward is the ultimate power fantasy. Lots of variety and fun to be had if you enjoy metroidvania games.

Void bastard is a Roguelite, where you play as prisoner going through the nebula and collecting materials for your future inmates once you die, with the ultimate goal of something forgettable. I cleared the game with a single death but no character change because of skill, so I can't say how the Roguelite experience was. But from a linear story and gameplay perspective, I definitely fought and saw everything.

The game is very interesting at first with an unique art style and stylistic choices that are very nicely looking. But all of this falls flat very very quickly. There is one way to play this game due to its nature of conserving and looting with a time limit. You go into a spaceship and take all the loot as fast as possible and avoid as many enemies as possible, this is done by opening the map and then sprinting to all the loot places and then escaping. It has some novelty in first encounters and guns but that also falls off rather quickly. There was a single interesting event with pirates but as before, only interesting the first time.

Now this gameplay loop would be fine if there was a considerably larger amount of map variety, there simply isn't enough maps to make this more fun. It is the same corridors for most of the spaceships no matter how far you progressed. The enemy variety gets a bit harder but the maps are still the same. There aren't any bosses to take on either and every main objective is rewarded with a comic strip that basically boils down to - yeet and go collect x and y again.

A very shallow game masked with pretty art style and comics. Gameplay > looks.

Set a couple of decades after XCOM 2, the game offers a standard set of 11 characters instead of the fully customizable ones. This can be seen as a downgrade to the other XCOM games but in my opinion it is just as great. This is a different take from the other XCOM games in that there are, in my opinion:

Pros

  • A variety of unique characters with some quirky voice lines
  • Same good old combat as the other games
  • A new breach system with fast paced encounters and action
  • Different setting that explores the post alien invasion
Now as for the list of con it is a bit longer, the game could definitely have been better but I enjoyed it for what it was,
Cons

  • Very little customization of characters, the agents skill tree is pretty easily maxed out and they at most give you one other choice. In some cases there is only a single valid choice because some skills are just useless eg. Vergo's guaranteed unconsciousness on opponents . Apart from skills armor can be customized a little bit with colours but not the full spectrum (why??), would have been cool with some sick muton armor or something
  • Enemy variety, the total enemy variety is probably pretty good but each of the three routes offers the same enemies again and again with Dark Events MAYBE adding something new. The final boss stage adds an old enemy from XCOM 2 as boss eg. sectopod or gate guardian or a slightly remodeled grunt with a name, most enemies are just human. But the universe should have a lot of aliens and hybrids so why are they just humans? It's a new game, where are the new interesting enemies
  • Voice lines - I am not talking about voice line between the Chimera squad because those are great. But enemy voice lines are just alien and they do the alien hiss at you from XCOM. It gets repetitive, the opposition are mostly human too or they should possess basic speech, ask for help/backup and have sympathy for their companions death.
  • Not the full Chimera Squad, a big criticism is the ability to not have the full Chimera Squad in your run, I understand this is due to the campaign being too short and the team size limit of four. But it is seriously disappointing to know that I have to play it twice just to try some new abilities and this doesn't make sense lorewise either - you could easily have broken chimera squad into two and send one team to deal with one situation and have another team to deal with the other. With the android it makes for 4 substitutes!!!
  • No benefit in using new characters, you have to level them from the start and train them up before they become as relevant as the ones you levelled. Thankfully the game isn't too difficult so you can level up multiples. Especially the last skill of some characters are absolutely game changing so it feels like a very very big downgrade if you substitute in a new rookie character. Giving the ultimate skills a bit earlier and reducing the power a bit, whilst having the situational upgrade later would help with this.
  • Level variety could use a bit - high rise buildings or warehouses are where all criminal activity take place I suppose

Despite all this criticism, I enjoyed it. Don't get this game if you expect the full epic battle fantasy of the normal XCOM, or the full seriousness with world at stake XCOM. This is a cheesy special forces spin off with very few stakes and hopelessly idealistic villains

My first impression of this game was great, cool Dwarfs and horde mode mechanics where you control a few Dwarves slaughtering all the orcs with interesting RPG elements and fully voice story telling. I read all the reviews about the combat system and didn't believe it was that bad the first 5 missions. The combat definitely needed polish but didn't think much of it.
That is until you start needing to cheese levels or to execute moves by spamming space every 2 seconds cycling every hero. The core gameplay loop just isn't fun, who likes to keep spamming space and execute a move to achieve perfect usage of skills or to sit around idling for HP to regen because the Orcs are stuck somewhere odd. Not all companions are equally strong too so a lot gets to sit on the bench.
  • The bugs in combat sure doesn't help either, you can cycle each character or highlight them all, sometimes they will move and sometimes they won't. Sometimes when you cast a spell it won't always fire and the character will just stand there only way to fix it is to use your mouse.
  • Variety in skills is also very limited, two choices every two level sometimes with no choices. Most interesting choices is arguably everyone but your main character, if you're forced to use him why not give him something no one else have?
  • The only way to make this a little bit enjoyable is to turn the difficulty all the way down to Very Easy.
  • Trinkets are useful but could've had its own menu, why bundle it together with the gold and loot
  • Provision concept is cool but then again I was never punished for being at 0 so why does it matter
  • Gold was only used for Trinkets, potions are useless as you can cheese the whole game.
  • Character auto attacks? why even bother making them do more than 1 damage, knock down clearly is the king in every regard in this game as it just instant kills

The story isn't something that is solely worth playing, while interesting at times it is just a good vs bad story and it doesn't offer much in depth backstories to companions.

I liked this game, gave it a fair chance and stuck with it to the end to see something / fight something cool. The game play loop just isn't good and this is a video game.

As the name suggest, A Short Hike is indeed a short hike. This is a fun game with lots of freedom and exploration to do. If you're looking for a soothing experiences and don't mind talking animals this is it.

Why go outside when you can just play this?

The game isn't better than Yakuza:0 but it's still a great game regardless.

Even though it has less content, less side content, the same city layout and combat style it's still a cool game if just for the story.

The bad:
On the hardest difficulty: every. single. mob will block all the time. It isn't what anyone would call peak fun for sure and there isn't any reason to play this difficulty unless you want to be a completionist. I myself wanted to be one but some elements in the game are super grindy especially in a certain non mandatory quest line with several conditions where some of them are random.
A certain boss that is the most unfun piece of garbage I have ever played in my life a difficult decrease or a certain skill is basically required to beat it. Even if you manage to beat it without a certain skill, you'll still get ducked afterwards if you healed too much. Thank you Yakuza.

The good:
Recurring characters from Yakuza:0, it ties in pretty well
Lots of mini games and a very nice karaoke (my ears are definitely blessed)

In total it's a good game for a Yakuza fan, wouldn't recommend if you didn't like Yakuza:0, if you liked the first but didn't like the combat just grab it on sale and plough through the main story.
