Old gem

Although I'm recommending it, I gotta say the game left me disappointed. Devs did not capitalize on the potential of the franchise and, in some cases, even ruined it. There are minor spoilers in my review so be ware of that.

Story: I really liked the way the story was going until that one final revelation about the Giants. They never had to do it so blatantly imo. And here I was, watching these incredible set pieces thinking to myself - "they really go far and beyond here" - only to find out it's a bait-and-switch. The first game felt very subtle, and even the final scene was almost like a dark heathenish ritual symbolizing the cycle of life and death. Psychology and mythology were blended in each other so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ well. Devs shot themselves in the leg making the game too self-aware a little too early in Senua's journey. Mythos won't do the thing anymore.

Characters: I'm not against them, but I wish they were more developed and brought something worthwhile story-wise. There are interesting interactions, but they ultimately serve no purpose other than following Senua around. Their arcs are pretty much non-existent. Thorgestr kinda has one, but he goes out sooner than it plays out. We learn about something terrible that his father forced him to do right before we travel to Borgarvirki. 10 minutes later - he dies. Excellent writing.

Combat: I, honestly, didn't have a huge problem with it due to how fights were staged. How Vikings are represented in their insane brutality, warcrying, setting themselves on fire and etc. Incredible stuff. That being said, I liked HB1 combat better 'cause of the range of attacks. People didn't do it justice back then, calling it shallow and simple. Well, now it is, indeed, a simple button clicker. And the last chapter exposes this utterly mediocre battle system to the fullest. ♥♥♥♥♥♥ block-spamming guards. ♥♥♥♥♥♥ boss fight. Still commend them for the spectacle, though.

Closing thoughts: Hellblade 2 left me feeling like it's missing a few chapters. The final twist could be good, even though I would prefer them to raise the stakes first and do this revelation later down the line after some Ragnarok type of event. It lacks any set up, any built up to it. It just comes out of the blue and that's my main issue with the game. I know there are other narrators and stuff, Fargrimr saying they sort of planted the fear inside Senua's head (which doesn't make sense because Senua saw Hela in the form of a Giant in the first game), but it only adds confusion at this point. The twist just isn't good. They didn't set up for it. Instead, they went too self-aware in a desperate attempt to justify the very purpose of this sequel's existence. At least, this is my take on it.

HB1 was a full package, HB2 feels like a half of it.

This game was super misunderstood back in the days. Cold days of PS3 graphics and sold-out journalists. Grow days. Old days. Nothing worse than ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ dog days.
