Probably the most poorly optimized game I've ever played. Judging by what I've seen online and on a variety of message boards, the game's poor functionality is a widespread issue. Would have loved it if the game ever worked, either "out of the box" or through the various fixes I attempted to employ, but alas. Grim Dawn never went above 20fps for me, and usually hovered around 8fps, with all visual settings turned off or down to their lowest at 1440p resolution, borderless fullscreen.

Don't bother buying this game if you planned on playing it with a keyboard and mouse.

1) Controls are clunky and the game struggles to understand more than the basic input of movement and shooting. Even then, the game frequently messes up the gunplay; you will find that your gun continues to shoot or zoom without your input. I can't stress enough how badly the shooting in this game operates with keyboard and mouse.

2) Outside of assist mode, there is heavy auto-lock aiming. Unless you enjoy having the game give you free headshots, you'll struggle to gain control of your reticle to aim on your own.

3) Another thing worth noting is that there is no way to permanently disable assist mode; every time you enter a combat map, the mode is re-enabled. This is a quality of life thing, but it's also reflects how the game operates thematically. Almost everything feels as if a shortcut was taken no matter what element of the game you deal with.

4) Devs couldn't be bothered to allow mouse input outside of camera movement and shooting. Navigating menus with the keyboard alone doesn't take forever to learn, it's just obnoxious and speaks poorly of the studio.

5) As far as quality of the game for story and characters and visuals, it's all mediocre and I can't come up with a negative or positive. It's simply generic in all regards.

6) If you're a fan of the SAO franchise, the pre-order may have been worth it for the second game free; otherwise this game sits solidly at a $15 maximum value.

Should some of these mechanics be fixed, the game looks like it could be solid fun for those who enjoy level and loot grinding.
