Honestly, Hearts of Iron III is one of the more difficult Paradox games out there. Compared to the newer Hearts of Iron IV, this game is still by far more difficult. But that's not to say it isn't fun!

The learning curve is incredibly steep; of all the strategy games I play, there isn't any competition. And it isn't the prettiest thing to look at (unless you think NATO unit counters and clicking boxes and numbers all day are pretty). But there is a lot going on all the time. You can definitely ease some of the difficulty by letting the AI take over parts of the game for you, but there is unquestionably an incredible amount of time that you can devote to even a single playthrough. Managing a major nation throughout the entirety of World War 2 could take hundreds of hours - if you micromanage everything and play to be the most effecient. And on the flip side, the same playthrough can take 10-30 hours as you let the AI do a lot of the work.

It is a lot of fun to conquer the world. It really is - especially in a World War II setting. There are few games in the World War II genre which can allow you the full breadth and depth of experiences as the head of a nation. It might not be pretty or easy - in which case I direct you to Hearts of Iron IV - but it is fun and rewarding. For a game that is now a decade old at the time of this writing (2009), it is still great but not without its fair share of bugs. Definitely give it a try.

Shogun 2 - Fall of the Samurai is an excellent Total War game, full stop. Exploring the Sengoku Period of Japanese History, you will be immersed in Japanese Culture from start to finish alongside intense battles. Campaigns are excellent quality and graphics have stood the test of time as of 2019. Out of the older Total War games, Shogun 2 is one of the best.

This review has been revised since its original negative review at ~1000 hours played

While the many DLC is rather pricey for this game, EU4 (even stand-alone without DLC) offers an exceptional experience to players. I quite like this game, and the 1000+ hours played should (hopefully) indicate just that.

I applaud the continued development shown to the game over the years; its considerably improved since its earlier versions long ago. And the fun that has captured my attention for many a day still shines in its various forms. A few highlights:

- Bringing the Byzantine Roman Empire back from the brink, stretching in 1821 from Sevilla to India
- Turning Russia into the French King's personal estate
- Stamping out many cultures in the name of my nation's own cultural supremacy
- Becoming the most valuable ally by literally doing nothing in allied wars
- Painting the New World in various wonderful colors
- Initiating a hostile takeover of the Catholic Church by the Pope so that the Pope will forever have absolute power
- Dismantling the Holy Roman Empire way too many times
- Crushing peasant revolts in ways that make the German Peasants War a day in the park
- Starting literal world wars that would make Napoleon sue for peace
- Crushing liberal revolutionaries so my Monarchy could have absolutism
- Crushing absolutist monarchies in the name of a liberal merchant republic

This game is really something. I am ready for another 1000 hours.
