It's a cute time killer and as long as you have the patience you do not have to buy anything in order to succeed.

The art style, the story-telling, the voice acting, the music, the combat. Everything about this game is exquisite and endearing and challenging. I love it.

Hyper Light Drifter is an atmospheric, beautiful game that both challenges and delights me. I particularly love the music, as it is sweeping and grand while also being fun and chipper. As many people have said, it feels very much like a combination of Dark Souls and Zelda. The game play is challenging, and therefore very rewarding. Every action in this game is accompanied by sound design that I can only describe as...satisfying.
As you can see, I actually only have slightly less than 3 hours of Hyper Light Drifter played, and this is an example of how challenging the game is. I find myself dying often, getting frustrated, and taking a break. But then 30 minutes later, I'm dying to come back again and give it a try. There is always a sense of accomplishment after finally killing every thing in my path and managing to NOT DASH OFF A FRIGGIN CLIFF KJSDFIBVSDFUNSKJD. There is a balanced combination of killing enemies, solving puzzles and exploration. Did I mention that this game is gorgeous? Because this game is gorgeous. I want to screen shot every thing I see, print it out and glue it to the inside of my eyelids.
I am so looking forward to progressing in Hyper Light Drifter and living out the rest of my life having exprienced such an immersive, fun, challenging and atmospheric game.
