This game has a lot going for it, I enjoy the atmosphere the developers have created. The armor and weapon classes are very detailed as well as all of the types of food that are in the game. Its all very accurate for the times and as a history buff and TTRPG gamer a lot of this detail is very enjoyable. The problems begin with the overall clunkiness of the game it seems it wasn't optimized very well there are some dialog choice paths that get messy and are troublesome to deal with. The combat system in theory is great but in practice doesn't work very well when in a fight with multiple opponents you have little control over who you lock on too as your screen is forced to whichever enemy is attacking you leading to getting attacked from one side then instantly pulled to another with no good way of switching back. This also comes into play when you try and flee a combat, at times you will get turned around to face the enemy losing what little "lead" you may be able to get. Which brings me on to another point that the game advises you to flee a combat if the odds are against you but there is no actual way to do this. Every enemy Iv'e encountered is easily able to keep up with you and slaughter you from behind. Even if you level your person up if you are outnumbered in a fight it is almost certain you will die. All of these issues are made far worse with the atrocious saving system; you have three ways to save your game. The first is by completing a quest, the second is by finding a bed somewhere in the world and sleeping at least an hour, and the third and worst offender is by using Saviour Schnapps an overpriced item in game that you have to buy that when you use gives you the Drunk condition so everytime you load from that save you will do so drunk. With all of this combined most of your time playing is journeying out to complete an objective only to have the game generate a random encounter of 4 people who pull you from your horse and slaughter you making you start the whole day over again because guess what you couldn't save. To conclude if you like riding across the countryside over and over again you'll like this game.

Early Access Review
The Long Dark is a beautiful and scenic game that you can lose yourself in for hours. The adversary of the game is not Zombies or Dinosaurs; instead it is, bottom line, a struggle for survival against Mother Nature. The simplicity of what was previously said and the art style is what makes this game great, and before today I would have wholeheartedly tell you to buy it and give it a try. But alas I can no longer recommend this game, barring it be fully released. My reason is that the makers of this game have recently been flat out unacceptable. They released a countdown for a countdown after not having released any content for months and have been teasing story mode for far too long. They claim to be passionate about the game and seeing what they've created I'd believe it; but this jerkaround of release dates needs to stop.
