If you don't mind the terrible UI this game can be a pretty enjoyable point & click/visual novel adventure with a somewhat solid combat system.

The gameplay loop is minimalistic yet somehow triggers the dopamine receptors quite easily, it makes you wanna do that next combat and see what drops even though the fights are repetitive and the loot is nothing to write home about. There are a few difficulty spikes that felt a bit unfair here and there, but you can always grind a bit more exp and gear to overcome bosses. Also, after beating the story you unlock "inferno mode", remember nightmare/hell from Diablo? This is basically the same, I sadly had no desire to grind the story all over again, but hey, someone might enjoy the extra challenge.

The best part of this game is the atmosphere, artwork and music are wonderful and immersive, the story is simple but effective, and has this "comic book feeling to it".

The only reason I'm not recommending this game is because of the steep price, It's a good game, don't get me wrong, and pretty impressive since it's a one-man project, but I don't think it's worth the asking price since there are better dungeon crawlers that are cheaper, however I think it's a "grab on sale" kind of game.

I also think we gamers have a duty to talk about these indie lower budget games, there's plenty to appreciate in games likes this one, the passion and talent oozes from everywhere within this game and deserves to be played.

This was pretty bonkers as far as twin-stick shooters go, gameplay was lit and clearly tailored for co-op play, sadly I couldn't test it out since I don't have any friends who have this game. Some of the later levels delve into bullcrap territory with their enemy density and unfair ambushes, but you can always pew pew your way to victory and there's no penalty for death.

There are some negligible RPG elements like leveling-up and stat allocation, but the only ones that felt impactful were the ones that upgrades health and tactical charge recovery rate. Loadouts and weapons on the other hand feel great, there are a couple "tactical equipment" like a mechsuit or an autoturret that felt great to use but are severely undertuned.

Story was pretty meh and forgetable. Classic corpo-war cyberpunk crap, characters were bland and boring, and for the 85% of the run-time I had no idea what the hell was going on.

Overall a decent experience, gameplay is great, graphics are gorgeous (pretty demanding on your system though) and soundtrack is fire. Recommended for 25-30 hours of pew pew.

When I first booted this game up I expected it to be a concise and simple RPG adventure, I most certainly didn't expect it to be as big and epic as it was. It starts simple enough, your character follows some dude into the forest and ends up transported into this other world which is supposedly some kind of promised land, only it isn't, everything has gone to ♥♥♥♥ since there is a cloud of deathfog slowly but surely encroaching on civilization, consuming everything it touches, and you must start figuring out what happened.

The story follows your character as he interacts with the two factions that live in this world while also uncovering the secrets of the Bygones, the previous inhabitants of this world that vanished. On the one hand there are the Nemeton, keepers of the law and tradition, on the other hand there are the Remnants, a bunch of dudes who want out of Drova. As you might imagine, they don't get along very well, therefore you must choose your allegiances wisely. You get to know and learn about both factions before you have to commit to one or the other, so you have enough time to get to know the characters better, most of them are well written and believable, complicating the decision further.

Combat is simple but has some layers of strategy. There are a few weapon types to choose from, each with its own combos and abilities, there is a certain rhythm to the combat, you are rewarded for following this flow chaining attacks together by building up your focus meter which acts as your "mana", letting you unleash powerful abilities. There are a healthy amount of enemies and encounters, each with their own weight. Every combat can be challenging or even deadly if you are not well prepared, even facing one additional enemy of the same type you've been fighting can be enough to overwhelm you. Besides weapons you can prepare for your fights with traps and bombs, also you unlock a fairly strong magic system late in the game with which you can cheese some particularly challenging enemies. Overall combat comes out as engaging and strategic, but cheeseable later.

I want to take a moment to talk about character progression in this game, since I think it's its strongest point. First of all, RESOURCES ARE FINITE in this game, drops, enemies and their exp, DON'T RESPAWN, making the economy and progression weighty and significant. This game is not a loot-fest, you start throwing stones and beating rats with sticks and slowly build-up into a spell-slinging death knight of doom and fire, you must work really hard for every gear upgrade, and when you finally get that better armor or weapon its stat increase feels important and earned. In the same sense, when you level-up you earn "Learning points", which you must allocate to either stat upgrades or learning new skills, and since exp is limited you must really consider you options well, do you want to learn how to skin animals? Or do you prefer to learn how to brew potions? Do you want to improve your skills with the bow or you'd rather learn how to pick locks? Every decision matters, but that's not all, you also have to find someone willing to teach those skills to you, oftentimes they don't do it for free. All these little details make character progression really interesting to me, since utility, combat skills and stat increases share the same learning point pool you really need to commit to a build.

The game is a true open-world, nothing stops you from going to more challenging areas early and have your butt handed back to you, but there's an important skill factor here, if you prepare and play well you can overcome these fights regardless of your gear, and if that doesn't work out you can always come later.

To conclude, this game is not what one might expect from looking at it, there's a lot to discover and enjoy here, deep systems, engaging story and well-written characters, a love letter for RPG fans, totally recommended.

Death's Door is an isometric action-adventure game with a huge focus on combat and exploration. Following a linear dungeon design in which areas connect with each other most gracefully, solving the occasional light-hearted puzzles and fight through a few gauntlets, collecting souls to buy your stat power boosts while scanning the zones for collectibles, this game makes for a great 10 to 15 hours.

The story is a simple yet beautiful tale about mortality and death, you play as an unnamed Reaper crow whose target's soul has been stolen and becomes trapped within Death's Door, you then are forced to collect souls in order to open the door and fulfill your duty as a reaper. The story is predictable but effective, it properly conveys its emotions through charismatic characters, solid world-building and a killer soundtrack, culminating in a satisfying yet simple ending. In top of that, there's a huge "but wait, there's more" moment in the post-game, unlocking a series of sidequests which I'm being honest seemed a bit tedious (didn't make it through all of them) but seem to deliver more context and work toward another ending.

Totally recommended if what you are looking for is a nice story with fun gameplay and a killer soundtrack.

This is one of the better coop roguelites.

With a variety of characters to choose from with unique play styles, great synergies among them and a simple but satisfactory RPG progression, combat starts difficult but you slowly but surely build towards becoming a powerhouse, making late-game pretty accessible. Dungeons are short and concise, runs can take up to 35 minutes and you always return with enough currency and exp to buy upgrades or level up!

I played about 70% of this game with my wife and had a blast. We somehow forgot about this game, but resumed my run like two weeks ago and finished the journey.

Aaah yes, the cherry on top, I know Hades made storytelling a central point for this kind of games, but this story in particular is pretty emotional and beautifully presented. Every single detail you find builds the lore up to a very satisfying conclusion. This is a tale of love, family and loyalty.

I'd totally recommend this game both for solo and coop play, especially with a loved one.

I'm tired of games trying so hard to be playable animes. Exposition and character interactions occur way too frequently and get in the way of the game, cinematics, banter while you are in the overworld and skits (small conversations between two or more characters which almost always are small talk like the weather or the character's preferences). to make it worse, almost none of those interactions are meaningful or fun since characters are one dimensional (the amnesiac-stoic protagonist, the smug noble, the loli, the musclehead, etc). In terms of gameplay; calling this a JRPG may be a stretch, combat is simplistic and button-mashy and gets worse the more you play since battles take way too long, progression and exploration are linear and pointless, enemy variety is non-existent, crafting cooking and fishing serve almost no purpose, maps are small and boring to explore.

At the time of writing I had played this game for 9 hours and I already felt like wasted time.

Completed the main story in 68 hours, but hear me out; THIS SHOULD BE A 20-HOUR-GAME, BUT IT'S SO DISRESPECTFUL OF YOUR TIME THAT DRAGS OUT UNNECESSARILY FOR HOURS UPON HOURS.

This game inspired and motivated me to never touch a "Tales" game ever again.
mild 5/10.

The Ghibli charm is there, the story is cute the characters are great to interact with, the world-building is ok and the visuals and music are master-crafted. HOWEVER.... Gameplay is full of unnecessary busywork, leveling and crafting is grindy as hell, AND FOR F's SAKE, that final boss was god-awfully infuriating, that battle alone made all the flaws the battle system have visible. The fight itself is not hard, but every time bosses throw skills at you you are locked into a cutscene, well the thing is the mf final boss casts skills every 2-3 seconds, and it's surrounded by adds which will probably stunlock you in an eternal loop as you helplessly watch as your characters slowly die even when 25-30 levels above the recommended. I have absolutely no desire to play the post-game which I know has optional bosses and harder versions of the ones in the story.

Ugh, this sounds so much like an angry rant, maybe I'm just not the target audience for this game, but despite it's highs, I wouldn't recommend this game at all, feels like it's designed to keep children busy.

Also, it runs like trash.

This is the first Assassin's Creed game I actually finish. So I don't really have any point of comparison, I think it's a fine RPG with solid mechanics, combat is fun and you can build into an absolute monster who oneshots anything and everything, story is well written but doesn't develop all that much, Bayek is mostly stoic and boring, but you can emphatize with him and his cause, plot twists won't be a surprise for anyone who knows a bit of history, still fun to get through. Although, the game is a lot longer than it needs to be (classic Ubisoft).
