TL;DR - Game feels similar to drifting in Mario Kart. Took me 3 hours to 100% the game. Game would benefit from more cars and tracks in a future update. Multiplayer works fine. Runs perfectly on Steam Deck.

-----------

I love rally racing and I'm a fan of old-school graphics, like PS1 games, so I've been anticipating this game's release.

The gameplay is similar to Mario Kart drifting, so if you've played lots of Mario Kart, this should be easy to pick up and play. There are a few little nuances and tricks that you have to figure out while playing. For example, drifting kind of magnetizes you to the ground, so drifting up a ramp is incredibly useful to prevent you from flying into outerspace.

In terms of content, there isn't a whole lot. I unlocked and played through all of the content, 8 courses x 3 cars = 24 races, in 3 hours. All the achievements are reasonable and easy to earn, and that's how I like my video game achievements. In total, I earned all 15 of them also in about 3 hours.

Multiplayer seems to work flawlessly. The actual gameplay of multiplayer doesn't differ from single player since in both instances you are racing "ghosts" of your opponents (multiplayer is actually real-time, but there's no collision). I had a really funny moment in a lobby where I was racing and an opponent flew through the air and dive bombed me like an airstrike, which made me laugh for a good 5 minutes straight. There's a replay tool that I made good use of to record that.

I played all 3.4 hours at the time of this review on my steam deck. Works perfectly on deck and I never ran into any issues. In the near future, the steam deck compatibility on the store's page will probably change from "unknown" to "verified".

I don't know if the developer has any more plans for this game, but I personally would enjoy a content update. Maybe more tracks and more cars, because the game is limited in that regard. What I would really love is a level editor, but that's too much to ask for and would take a lot of work.

This is a well-made little game and I'm glad I wasn't disappointed because I've had it sitting in my wishlist for awhile waiting for it to come out. I think it's priced fairly in my region (10 USD) and I bought it for 15% off at launch.

Fight Angel receives a positive review for being a great combination of all the things I love; and for doing them at least halfway decent. Fighting game genre, ecchi content, and character customization. Of these things, the character customization engages me the most. I'm a sucker for creating characters, whether it be MMO's or Fighting games or Shooters. And this game has a great in-depth character creator, with an okay amount of costumes. Hopefully a future update/release will bring more clothing to the game. At the very least, the character creation doesn't feel half-assed.

The only thing I have to say about the "fan-service" of this game is that it does a good job of not making the game's sole focus feel sexual. Well done, in that department.

Now, the fighting game aspect. If I had to give a comparison, it seems like the developers drew inspiration from the old King of Fighters games for the combos, and Street Fighter for the movement. From what I've found most combos go like this: (Aerial Attack) > Crouch attack string > Standing Attack String > Special > (Super/Avenge) > Finisher/OTG. Crouches have to be linked, you can't buffer them (That's one thing that I hated about KoF, but obviously that is subjective). I've really only played 2 characters though. Combos are okay, but I don't feel like there's a lot of depth there. Either that or the game's system is more complex than I thought and just goes over my head. Although the combos seem heavily inspired by KoF, the game itself feels nothing like the series at all. By that, I mean that the gameplay feels very slow overall, there are little movement options (No running, no special movement-based specials, and I find myself jumping rarely), most attacks feel kind of weak, and there aren't really any tech/recovery/oki options (or maybe I just can't seem to figure it out). Many things which make a fighting game exciting to play seem to be missing. There are other little quirks in the game that are less important, such as the motion for some inputs (Z-input is actually only registered if you input: Forward, Down, Down-forward, Forward. You MUST input the last forward, otherwise the move will not come out. Strange right? and Back, Forward inputs ONLY register with specifically BACK then FORWARD. You can't do Down-back, Forward or Up-Back, Forward), and the window to input your second forward or back for dash or backdash is way too long and I often accidentally dash while trying to do something else. These aren't really big deals, just mildly annoying, and easily patched if the devs realize it. The game has a few different modes. Training mode is bare bones, but it makes do. A fighting game always gets extra points in my book if it includes a story mode, which Fight Angel does have, however good luck getting a firm grasp on the story unless you change the language to Chinese. That being said, I WAS somehow able to follow along the strange storyline. I haven't tried the arcade mode or the versus mode. Lastly, yes, the clothes DO come off mid-fight, so maybe think of making a control scheme that's one-handed.

Overall Summary of the fighting part of the game:

If you are a competitive fighting game player, this is probably far below your standards. However, if you are a big fan of the genre and enjoy this type of booby-jigglying content, I'm sure you'd enjoy it. I enjoy the fighting portion of the game, but it certainly doesn't compare to other indie fighting games like Melty Blood. Not amazing, but not horrendous.

The UI/Menus/Everything else. I don't know. There's a lot to say, and I don't know where to start. I guess I'll start with the translation (Credit to Nyanco Channel for the translation, thank you very much). People are probably fed up with bad translations of Asian games, but personally I think they're hilarious and I enjoy experiencing a sentence that is so screwed up that I can't even make a guess as to what it is trying to tell me. And that's where this game is at. For a large part of the game, you'll be able to scrape by on the English translation, but there's always those one or two wacky sentences that you just have to ponder over for a little while. And sometimes the textboxes are too small for the text or it will have to break a word to the next line (For example: there are some vertical text boxes in the character bio screen that would work with vertical Chinese characters, but the English words just wrap around. I'm sure they would work if it was shortened to one word and the word was formatted vertically). The UI and menus are really great at some points in the game and weak in others (I love the main menu but the pause menu is so basic). The game is riddled with bugs and glitches, so many that I'm not sure some will be addressed before release (I pray to God this game releases). Just a couple include the character select screen, controlling the menu, and some supers being confirmed, but its animation doesn't finish. Oh well. No bug or glitch that I have run into has been a major problem that made the game unplayable.

I'd say if you are thinking about buying Fight Angel, then go ahead. I got it for $15 (full price is $20 at the time of this review). If you can get it for $15, I'd say that's a fair price. I want to see this game release, and buying the game is essentially funding the development, so go ahead.

Risk of Rain was my favorite rogue-like, so I was really excited to see this game. Somehow, even though Risk of Rain 2 is 3D, it feels very similar to first one, and that's a good thing! And despite being in early access, it feels very polished. I am eagerly awaiting for them to fully release the game. I just want to say that this game blows every other game out of the water.
