Unplayable on a modern PC. I tried, but I couldn't get the resolution to work. The text was either too small to read, or the stuff to click monstrously big.

Early Access Review
This is one of those games... where... you either like it, or you don't. I think fans of Sid Meier's Civilization will like this game a lot, but everyone else, probably not.

Too much much-ness compared to civ 5. A lot less can be automated.

I really wanted to like this version a lot, and don't get me wrong, it's still a pretty good game (with mods to tailor it more to the experience I want).

What I didn't like:
1. Pillaged Improvements are almost impossible to see at a glance, and there doesn't appear to be a way to have a "view" to be able to see them easily. Since you cannot automate workers in this one, it's near impossible to not miss some of these to be fixed for a few turns unless you are trying to really focus on literally everything.
2. Combination of cultural and research trees are extremely overwhelming. I don't want to have to pick my current government's priorities and/or technologies like literally every 4 turns. Just let me enjoy playing the other parts of the game like in 5, I didn't need the cultural tree to be as often as techs.
3. While it does work better than civ 5's system, there's something I can't really nail down that I don't like about the city-state system. Almost like it is too manual, but would be much better if relationships could be more automatic (and maybe still allow manual handling by the player if they want). Just like in civ 5, it seems like the player has a huge advantage here for no real reason other than existing for me.
4. Why isn't there a an easy button to turn on strategic view for districts? I can't seem recognize the actual tile graphics when zoomed out, I'd like an easy reference symbol like the one when you go into city view. Why not just have an easy option to show it all the time, just like they allow with resources.
5. Why is even the smallest map option so huge? I really liked in civ 5 how I could compact like 8 civs fighting on a small map and it didn't feel overwhelming. In this one, they limit the civ count by map size, so no more cutthroat free for all wars early on a duel map. Playing even the normal size map seems extremely overwhelming. Civ 6 makes building "wide" a necessary part of winning the game (If you don't, the AIs will take all the space near you and block you out from being able to move between cities, and you'll also fall behind in production). I played on a normal map and had to have like 12 cities to remain a viable country at minimum prior to even attacking and claiming another civs cities. Trying to manage that many cities with getting tech and civics upgrades literally all the time is just too much to be enjoyable and also play competitively on Prince difficulty. The civics stuff is also just not that interesting as most of it is bonuses to "other" things, it seems wholly unnecessary to have to manage it manually.
6. The new worker system. I don't care for this at all. It adds a new layer of micro managing that's necessary and not fun. I liked being able to automate workers in the older versions once I got what I needed done. In this version you have to micro manage them to use them at all. It's annoying that you can just automate one to fix pillaged improvements etc. Something relatively obvious to a player that doesn't need micro managing.
7. Naval units... why? Once you get to like the second era, all land units double as naval units. Why was this done, it makes naval units almost useless in games.
8. Archipelago type maps are bad in civ 6. The game has a heavy focus on land improvements for resources and districts. Making a city on the coast is almost always bad due to this as most water tiles will almost always be worse than the worst land tile. This sucks because I loved the naval combat aspect of Civ 5, and Civ 6 makes naval combat almost pointless.

What I did like:
1. Districts, I did like this aspect of the game a lot. Strategically placing them, and being able to use normally unusable hexes adds a good amount of depth to the game. They make bad places on the map at least viable to expand, but don't make bad locations "good," which I feel adds a bit of depth to the game. Districts also fix an issue I had with civ 5 where you couldn't build ship units unless the city itself was on the coast, this is a huge improvement for optimal city placement.
2. Religion. This plays a much more prominent part in Civ 6, and it's pretty interesting. I have some gripes with the system in that it's a little much. A lot of the times I end up focusing on other aspects of the game and "forget" to spend my religion points. It would be nice to have a reminder to spend religion points instead of it just accumulating for a long time.
3. AI. The AI in this version seems so much better than 5. I wish the AIs in 5 acted like the ones in this version, it would such an improvement to 5.
4. Civ 6 exposes a lot more of the "numbers" behind the scenes, such as how much religion a city has, how much favor-ability the AIs have for you, etc. This was a step in a good direction, as you used to have to get mods for Civ 5 to see such things.

I ended up playing Civ 6 for about 20 hours before writing this review. I think I'm going to go back to 5 for normal play again, as I think overall, it's a game that fits my play style better. Although I say that, I still recommend this version of Civ as it is a good game, just not as good as Civ 5. I'm still excited to see what the new Civ 7 will have in store, as the odd number releases have always been the ones I end up liking (I also didn't care for Civ 4 haha).

I wanted to play this so bad... but the interface controls need a big overhaul. Left click is used for everything in the game. You can accidentally do one thing while actually intending to do another constantly. Playing this game makes you realize just how much in the RTS genre has been standardized for ease of play, and just how hard it is to play an RTS when the interface is done horribly.

Would definitely be interested in playing the game if the AI was better and they fixed the interface controls.

I can't believe how intuitive the interface for this game was (in the 90s!). I jumped right back into playing after a 20 year hiatus and it was a fun nostalgic ride! Very much recommend.

Love this iteration of the Civ series. Was the one that came the best naturally to me.

I really wanted to like this game, but I ran into glitch after glitch trying to play the tutorial. Eventually I just gave up trying.

This has one of the best implementations of a board game into a board game video game that I have played. I really like the board game, but none of my usual friends who are into that kind of thing like board game Root. Having a computer game version that I can play at any time is really nice to have available.

I honestly can't recommend this game to others in the general sense.

In the more niche sense, if you have a really technical mind and don't care about being ground into the dirt until you "get it," it might be the game for you. This game takes a ton of time, patience, and practice to be even an average player. Most gamers I know either get bored of playing a single game for too long (in which case they will never "get" how to play this game), or aren't looking for an experience that's actually dynamically challenging. What I mean by the last part is that your opponents and the community learn with you, there's never a point where you understand how to win. That could really bother most people who are looking for "the way" to win, this game does not have that in the higher skill cap meta play.

Try at your own risk.
