Early Access Review
I put in around 100 hours and quit about a year or so ago. I liked the game, but I had reached the end of the available content, and what existed at the time felt sparse and needed to be fleshed out and refined a bit. I decided to come back because the game kept calling to me. Unfortunately, I think the dev(s) broke it. I deleted my previous save because I wanted to play through the game as it existed now assuming there had been some changes, additions, etc. I've only just started exploring the starting area, but I can tell you, things are buggy as heck. It's very hard to play. I'm not sure what they did, but I'm experiencing bugs, poor performance, and janky behavior where none existed before. Kind of sad. I tuned back in hoping to find a more completed game, only to find that it's now virtually unplayable.

Game is AFU. They need to have PVP only zones. They mix PVP and Guild events and areas with PVE and it prevents PVE players from accessing content (or makes it impossible because they get killed by PVP players) while these events are happening. Just stupid... Not all of us enjoy PVP.

After suffering all of the minor issues this game has and really wanting to enjoy it, I finally gave up. Granted, there are positive things about it that I really liked, but the negatives have now thoroughly overcome any goodwill. Almost 230 hours logged, I have been working on the final boss battle for days. I finally set everything to as easy as possible, but the waves of minions don't stop. I was at over 20 waves at one point before they killed me, and the game won't progress to the 2nd stage of the fight. What a load of crap. This game sucks.

So, the mouse wheel zooms my FOV in and out during regular play (not weapon scope)? Is it really necessary to be adjusting my FOV that often that we have dedicated the mouse wheel to it? Ahhhh, but no way to scroll through my hot bar? I have to press "1" for the first item, "2" for the second item, etc.? Are you crazy? Do you devs. even play your own games? Sorry, that's a hard no on this game. I can't be moving my hands around the keyboard that often or putting that much conscious thought into weapon/item selection. It's tedious and breaks immersion. I won't play games that give this little thought to control layout, I don't care how good the content is. You just pooped on it.

No cloud save. I got a new computer and my game is now gone. I wish I'd known before...

Before that, I was about 14 hours in when I encountered issues with mouse actions not behaving right, but I returned (or tried to) hoping they had patched it.

Very engaging game right up until the moment I couldn't play it anymore. Maybe you'll have better luck.

Awesome game! Starts slow and very simplistic. Don't get bored or think that's all there is. As the game unfolds, the crafting, story development, and complexity grow into an addictive survival-crafting achievement. I'm addicted!

I have no patience for writing reviews, but I wanted to add my "thumbs up" for ratings purposes. Wholly unique and engaging. I couldn't stop playing.

QUIRKY, WHIMSICAL, ORIGINAL, although still very buggy and missing things. I've spent all weekend playing this game, and I have to say I love it. I'm a little disappointed that some things are missing that cause quests to go unfinished, some areas seem to have a purpose but aren't developed yet, etc. Very fetch-quest atm, but looking forward to more varied activities and content. A great start and it will only get better. I'm trying to decide if I put it down until it's finished a bit more, or keep playing. Screw it! I'm going to keep playing. I'm addicted. Great effort, keep it up dev.!

I cannot recommend this game in it's current state.

For the record, I absolutely loved The Forest. I was depressed for days when I finished it, but stoked when I heard of a sequel. However...

First of all, the game needs some serious balancing. I normally play games on hard or above, but even on "normal" difficulty, this game is punishing. Enemies one-hit kill you, even when you're wearing armor. It requires a minimum of two gun shots to the chest to kill even the weakest enemies (females) and the big brutes can take 6-8 shots. Most other weapons do very little damage. You will simply never have the resources to combat the constant onslaught of attacks. If you do survive an attack, you might as well just reload because there aren't enough meds in the world to heal back up that often. Also, you can injure an enemy so badly that they are bloody and unconscious, only to have them stand up and attack you some more 5 seconds later. This makes dealing with multiple enemies simultaneously impossible.

So why not be stealthy and avoid the enemy as much as possible? Not a chance. The natives are aggressive and seek you out on the surface. This is very unlike the first game, where encounters rarely happened at my bases. Sure, they would send someone exploring and possibly a larger group when you were discovered, but this is a constant barrage of 6-8 enemies. I no sooner put them down than the next group arrives. Wave after wave... I have spent my entire time in-game just trying to build a simple structure (from a recipe). I have to save every time I place a log or two because I will be attacked and killed so easily (or forced to run off and hide for an hour) that I continually lose progress.

Another way I lose progress is that the enemies would just as soon destroy your structures as attack you. And the structures are super fragile. In the original game, they could pound on things pretty good, and I definitely had to keep up repairs, but the structures were never completely destroyed. Recently I had one of the brutes head but my cabin two or three times and there was almost nothing left of it. As soon as I finished my house, I set the game options so that structures couldn't be damaged. This feels like cheating to me, but it's the only way I'm going to get anything done in the game's present state.

Enemies also steal your stuff constantly. I don't blame them, but I don't remember it being this big of a problem before. You can't leave anything unguarded or it's gone. It's crazy because they send 8 enemies and you can't decide if you're going to fight the one chasing you, go swat the one that is destroying your house, or try to stop the one that's stealing your logs. I'm trying to build a wall to protect my things, but as mentioned previously, the progress is slow due to the other issues.

Other issues include a shortage of fish and small game. I can't ever seem to get enough to stockpile, I'm always eating whatever I catch immediately because I'm always hungry and the supply can't keep up. Apparently there is also "winter" on this island. My base is on the beach, but it is snowing there, and I'm not even at any elevation. Literally the flattest, lowest spot I could find. the mountains on the island appear to be roughly in the middle, so it's not that I'm in a snowy zone. It appears that the whole island is. I spent a few hours trying to make a circle of the island, and sure enough, there was no place I could find that was not covered in snow. This makes it difficult to find sticks and rocks, and from what I can tell, you also catch fewer fish when it's cold (it wasn't snowing when the game started). I don't know how long this "season" will last, but it's very frustrating. Worst of all (or maybe best of all...) the cold has almost no effect on your health or stamina. I walk around wearing nothing and there are no ill consequences. I guess I should be happy about that, but the mechanic makes no sense. In the original game, there are zones you can't even go to until you found/crafted warm clothes.

So for the moment, I am putting the game aside and waiting for improvements. Yes, I realize this is early access, so I post my issues only so you can decide if you're willing to deal with these things now or if you would prefer to wait until the game is more polished. I feel like my frustration level is ruining the game for me and I want to take a break before I get so fed up I never return. I have no doubt this game will be well worth the price when finished, but my advice would be to wait a little longer to ensure the greatest chance that you will enjoy it to its fullest. Just don't forget to check back, or you could be missing out on an installment in one of the best game series I've played on Steam.

New: Well so much for the difficulty level. Once you get the shotgun, enemies are a joke. Also, weather plays almost no factor in the game. I can walk around with no clothes in the middle of winter and suffer only a mild impact to my stamina. Death due to the environment is not an outcome. Other little distractions that could be fixed include the plant recipes. There's no point in gathering and combining plants as there are plenty of meds and energy bars lying around that have the same effect, only more so. You can't boil water in the pot to purify it. The list goes on.
