You should widen your search when you play the killer. If you reach a lit generator seconds after it's been activated, you shouldn't just check the closest cover, but also anything within about thirty feet or so. The high grass and trees immediately around a gate are also common hiding spots. Remember that you're faster than the survivors, and if they're walking to conceal their tracks, they only have so many hiding spots in range.
