...honestly, this probably isn't gonna be as much of a review as a commentary wrapped in an anecdote, but here goes.

This actually kinda makes me think of how I discovered one of my all time favs, Power Stone. I had a demo disc for the Dreamcast, which included a demo for Power Stone. Despite only getting to choose between two characters and three stages, I wound up spending a lot of time playing that demo. Needless to say, I was elated when I finally got access to the full game.

Playing the demo for Fly Punch Boom has almost been like watching history repeat itself. The two games are actually somewhat similar, what with both being free-roaming fighters where you can break pieces of the environment over your opponents head. In fact, I find I tend to favor fighters that stray away from the Street Fighter template, especially if they also take inspiration from wrestling (although in the case of Fly Punch Boom, obviously most of the inspiration is from DBZ, but it does have those "ropes" that form the "ring" and Skelly sorta has a wrestler vibe to it, plus the aforementioned breaking of stuff over heads).

Of course, the biggest differences between the two are that Fly Punch Boom is 2D, the characters literally fly all over the screen, you basically exchange blows through quicktime events (gotta level with ya, not the biggest fan of those), and there's a variety of fatalities (which, thankfully, unlike the Mortal Kombat Konami Code input string fatalities, are instead contextual, which was something I always appreciated about the move sets from Power Stone).

So far, it looks like Fly Punch Boom is really shaping up. I may never get Power Stone 3, but I may have found another fav.
