Arthur Hastings, the first man, tricked his autistic brother into going to Germany alone while he stayed behind, after promising they'd look after each other. Then fought desperately to forget that truth, and also holding Sally Boyle's abuse at the hands of his father against her. Blaming her for SEDUCING his father.
Sally Boyle, the woman in question, was trying to make the best of a horrific situation that she found herself in time and time again, that the story paints as EQUALLY TERRIBLE for being sexually abused by a guardian at 16, and then having two toxic and abusive relationships after that.
And last but not least, Ollie Starkey. A man who did terrible, horrible things, and then tried to force his memory to erase that truth with drugs, causing him to go mad. One of said things was kidnapping a neighbourhood girl to try to "save her" from having to be sent to Germany, but also getting serious Humbert Humbert vibes from him. He then proceeds to hallucinate that she's still with him, and is in fact his daughter. And THAT'S why he's obsessed with her. He manages to tell people some harsh truths that are important, then leaves via parade float and urinates over the people of England.
Also the Sally stuff is TOTALLY OKAY, because SHE'S NOT LIKE THE OTHER GIRLS.... and has mommy issues.... and also says things when she knocks enemies out like, "You asked for it, looking at me like that" and "Shh, just let it happen". WOAH WHAT A TWIST ON THE PATRIARCHY
