One of the best, and most unique adventure games. It's a truly memorable classic which helped revive the genre at the time. I remember when I first learned about Syberia, the idea of a plot involving automatons and mammoths didn't excite me, but I was very curious how it all tied together. This is a slow-moving, story-heavy game with strong atmosphere and a beautiful, haunting soundtrack, as lawyer Kate Walker heads east through Europe to find an eccentric inventor. and close a business deal. In many ways this game is about Kate's character development, and you can't help but to go through the experience with her. The game seems to take place around the time it was created (2002) but as you visit the locations, touched with elements of art nouveau, steampunk, and the scars of world war, the game feels enchanting, surreal, and totally out of time in the most endearing way. The intelligent script, mysterious and charming, has it's moments of suspense and humor, too.

Now, the puzzles to be found are somewhat straight forward and will likely give you no trouble. So this isn't a puzzle-centric adventure, which may push some people away. Also, the game has been criticized for having many screens where there's nothing to interact with as you move between points of interest. I can understand that running through 4 screens of landscape at a time with nothing to do, and then running back through them, can be irritating to some people. However, I find this is something that contributes to the immersive and thoughtful tone of the game, like looking at paintings.

I should mention that while this is the must-play gem of the series, the shorter sequel is still very good, and the 3rd game, developed 13 years later and coming out next month, will no doubt be interesting.
